

George Thomas Alexander passed away on Thursday afternoon, April 24, 2025. George was born on November 6, 1928, in Worcester, Massachusetts, to Thomas John and Bessie Alexander. He grew up in Worcester, along with his 3 sisters, attending public schools and helping his father at his restaurant/hotel. George attended the New England College of Pharmacy and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Theological Seminary. He served in the Massachusetts National Guard (1948-1950) and the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany (1952-1954). He then owned and operated the Colonial Soda Shop in Worcester.
He married Betty Routsos of Atlanta on June 16, 1957. Atter moving to Atlanta, he worked in wholesale spirit sales and later owned and operated two retail package stores.
George was a member of the Atlanta Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation since 1958. He volunteered in many roles, including serving on the Parish Council. He worked tirelessly for the American Hellenic Educational and Progressive Association (AHEPA) and was instrumental in building the AHEPA Senior Apartments in the late 1990’s. He served as President of AHEPA ONE, Inc. for several years. He was a member of the American Legion and was a Mason in the Boylston Lodge and Worcester County Commandery until his death.
George was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, in 2015. He is survived by his son, Thomas Alexander, his son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Celeste Alexander, and his favorite grandson, Ian Alexander, all of Atlanta. He is also survived by his sister, Agnes Petropoulos, of Middletown, RI, his sister and brother-in-law, Bette and Charles Roditakis of North Attleboro, Massachusetts, his sister-in-law, Stephanie Peppas, of Atlanta, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Lee Demas, of Lanham, Maryland, in 2015.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to George’s dedicated caregivers for the past 6 1/2 years, Barbara Hambrick, Denease Glover, and Marcus Carter.
Family and friends will be received from 5pm to 7pm on Monday, April 28 at Patterson’s Oglethorpe Hill with a prayer service at 5pm. The funeral service will be at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation, 2500 Clairmont Road, Atlanta, on Tuesday, April 29, at 10am with interment at Greenwood Cemetery following.
