George was born into an Army family on March 23, 1942 at Pine Camp, NY. He lived at posts around the U.S. and the world with his family, attending kindergarten in Paris, and high school in Italy and Germany. Most summers were spent in and around the water at his family’s lake house in Michigan. While his family was stationed at Ft. Sheridan, IL he met his future wife, Jean Bedford.
George graduated from Virginia Tech and received an MBA from Golden Gate University before beginning a career in business during which he held varied roles, mostly in Atlanta, at a range of organizations including family-owned enterprises and Fortune 100 companies. In retirement, he relished traveling with his wife, often with grandchildren tagging along. He also imparted his sense of humor on his grandchildren and instructed them in the art of the prank, such as the “pillow-over-the-door” trick, much to their delight and much to the chagrin of their father.
George is survived by his wife, Jean Bedford Gillis; his son, William Jordan Gillis; daughter-in-law, Leigh Ann Wood Gillis; and grandchildren Ann Bedford Gillis and Thomas Wood Gillis, all of Atlanta.
A memorial service will take place at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta on Sunday, October 1st at 1:30pm."
