Herbert Allan Arnold, a long time Atlanta resident, passed away Thursday October 9, 2014. Herb was born on April 7, 1929 in Pittsburgh, PA to Sigmund and Rose Arnold. He attended the University of Pennsylvania where he met his adored wife Madeline Gardner. They were married in 1950 at Temple Kesher Israel in Harrisburg, PA.
Herb enlisted in the US Air Force and served for 2 years in Iceland. Upon his return he and Maggi lived in Boston, where Herb attended Harvard University and received his MBA. During their two years in Boston, their first son Mark was born. Children James and Susan followed after Herb and Maggi moved to New York City.
In New York, Herb launched his career on Madison Avenue. For 20 years he worked for several of the world’s foremost advertising agencies as a Senior Account Executive, representing such brands as Maxwell House Coffee, General Foods, Jiffy Pop Popcorn and Pepsi Cola. In 1972 he worked as a consultant for the Coca Cola Company. In 1975 Herb joined Coca Cola full-time and along with his wife Maggi and their daughter Susan moved to Atlanta. Shortly thereafter he became Vice President and General Manager of Fountain Sales for Coca-Cola USA. Herb enjoyed an outstanding career at Coca Cola – and headed the team that introduced America to the Large Size Fountain Drink. In July 1978 he was featured on the cover of Beverage World magazine where the caption read “King of the Fountain”. At Coke, Herb was passionately devoted to the Variety Children’s Charity, where he, along with celebrities such as George Burns, Gregory Peck, Monty Hall and many others raised funds to assist physically handicapped youth.
In 1988, his dear daughter, Susan, was killed in a tragic auto incident, and just two years later, his wife Maggi lost her life to Cancer. A year later, he began dating the lovely Myrtice Cohen, and they have been together blissfully for 21 years, and married for 14 years.
Dad’s greatest life passions were athletic in nature, and kept him trim and fit as a tennis player and skier. Each September he took his family to the U.S. Open Tennis Championships, beginning on grass courts in Forest Hills and then to Flushing Meadow Park, where he, along with Coca-Cola, became a major Sponsor of the Tournament. He shared his passion for skiing with his children, grandchildren and now on to his great grandchildren.
Herb is survived by his wife Mytice, his sons Mark and James, daughters-in-law Sheila and Laura, grandchildren Benjamin, Rebecca, Jacob, Rachel and Daniel and Great Grandchildren Ryder, Easton, Brooks and Grayson and his brother, Larry along with many adored nieces and nephews.
Gifts, in his honor, may be made to the American Cancer Society or The Temple, Atlanta, GA. Online condolences may be made at hmpattersonspringhill.com.
