Herman Harrell Scott of Decatur, Georgia passed away at Hospice Atlanta on the morning of April 22nd, Good Friday. He had been moved from Emory University Hospital the day prior and was greeted at the Hospice by many members of his family both immediate and extended. To be surrounded by his family delighted him. His family was his greatest love and work. His last words were, “Good kids!” Herman Scott was born January 20, 1923 in Norfolk, Virginia to Elmon Lee Scott and Olive Scott. He attended Newport News High School and the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School. At the outbreak of World War II he enlisted in the Merchant Marines and became a Chief Engineer serving on Liberty Ships. He delivered equipment to troops in North Africa and Italy and was involved in convoy operations in both the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Following the War he attended Elon College and Virginia Polytechnic Institute, now Virginia Tech. He also held an advanced engineering degree from Johns Hopkins. While at Elon he met Jacqueline Gaskins of Churchland, Virginia. She became his wife in 1949 and was always his best friend and biggest fan. He worked briefly for the TVA after which he joined the Scott Paper Company, now Kimberly Clark. Scott Paper relocated him to Brunswick, Georgia in 1951 where his two sons were born. In 1958 Scott Paper moved his family to Atlanta where he remained. Herman was the consummate entrepreneur. After working for Scott Paper for thirty years he took early retirement at age 55 so he could pursue any deal that looked good. At one time or another he owned multiple mobile home parks, a machine fabrication plant, a metals forge, a complex of office warehouses and several residential developments. He perfected the art of the deal long before Donald Trump coined the term. Still, his greatest love was his family and he would do anything that was legal to help each and all achieve their dreams. He is survived by Jacqueline G. Scott, his wife of 62 years, his sister Anne Hope Scott of Rockville, Maryland, children Michael A. Scott of Newnan, Georgia and Harrell David Scott of Savannah and their wives Julie J. Scott and Wanda Scott. He was blessed with six remarkable grandchildren, Jordan Cotter Scott, Lanie G. Wolf, Michael Alexander Scott, Eli Scott, Brock Scott and Cory and JoDe Hollis. His latest great loves were his great-grandchildren, Hannah and Haley Hollis of Savannah. A member of Wieuca Road Baptist church since 1958, he served as deacon and Sunday school teacher. Since he was unable to attend Virginia Tech football games he became a lifelong booster of the greatest engineering school in the country, Georgia Tech. He had season football tickets since 1959. A memorial service celebrating the life of Herman will be held at Wieuca Road Baptist Church Wednesday, May 4th at 11:00 a.m. Visitation with the family will take place in the Heritage Room of the Church beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment and a graveside service will be held at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia at 2:30. In lieu of flowers the family requests that all friends contribute to Wieuca Road Baptist Church or to a charity or church of their choosing.
