

Born in Pittsburg, Kansas on June 26, 1921 to Edgar William and Katherine Meirs Smither, his family
moved many times around the Midwest during the Depression before settling in Dallas, Texas in 1936.
He graduated from W. H. Adamson High School in 1938 and went on to attend Texas A&M where he
graduated in 1942 with a bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was also commissioned as an
officer in the U.S. Army where he served in the Air Corps as a bomber pilot during WWII. In 1943 he
married Rosemary Rault and together they went on to raise six children.
After WWII, Jack worked for Vinson Supply Company in Dallas, Texas and Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 1956 he
moved to Atlanta where he started Jack M. Smither & Co. (now Control Southern) as a manufacturer’s
representative for industrial process control instrumentation and during the next 25 years built his
company into an industry leader in the Southeast.
He and his beloved Rosemary were married for 59 years before she predeceased him in May 2002. He is
survived by his six children; Carol Mansfield (Kelly) of Reston, Virginia, Susan Riley (Jim) of Dallas,
Texas, Jay Smither (Linda) of Roswell, Jeanne East (John) of Knoxville, Tennessee, Tom Smither
(Michele) of Marietta, David Smither (Sherra) of Aubrey, Texas, 22 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren
and 2 great great grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Monday, September 7 from 5 - 7p.m. at H. M. Patterson & Son, Oglethorpe Hill, 4550
Peachtree Rd. NE, Brookhaven, GA 30319. A funeral mass will said on Tuesday, September 8 at 1:00 p.m. at
The Cathedral of Christ the King, Atlanta. Burial will follow at Arlington Memorial Park, Sandy Springs.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice Atlanta, 1244 Park Vista Drive
