Mrs. Joan Weadon Cravey of Sea Island, Georgia, died peacefully in her sleep Saturday morning, October 8, 2016 in Macon, Georgia following evacuation from Hurricane Matthew. Although she spent most of her married life in Atlanta, Joan was a true daughter of the Golden Isles. Born in Brunswick, Georgia on January 16, 1930, Joan grew up on St. Simons Island, graduated from Glynn Academy, and attended the University of Georgia where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. Joan met her future husband and love of her life, Zack D. Cravey, Jr., on the beaches of St. Simons when he had a summer job working for the State Game and Fish Department. They continued to date as students at UGA, married in July 1950, moved to Atlanta, and started their family. Like many young couples of the Greatest Generation, Joan and Zack began their married life with love, worked hard, and achieved their American dream. As a young Mother, Joan raised her three girls, was active in her church, Northside United Methodist where she taught Sunday school. Joan played competitive tennis, enjoyed her garden club and bridge group, and became quite a good golfer. Joan and Zack returned to the Marshes of Glynn, building a home on Sea Island which became their primary residence. Zack passed away on January 7, 2014 and Joan remained on Sea Island until Hurricane Matthew intervened. Joan is survived by her three daughters and her son-in-law: Joan Bland Cravey of Atlanta, Georgia; Carol and Philip Attridge of Gainesville, Georgia; and Dana Ann Cravey of Alpharetta, Georgia. The family will receive visitors at Patterson’s Spring Hill from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 12, 2016. Interment will take place at Westview Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2016. The family will host a celebration in honor of Joan’s life on Sea Island to be determined at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to your favorite charity.
