A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Joan was the daughter of the late Ruth Hughes Coart and William Cox Coart. Her brother, William Cox Coart, Jr. also preceded her in death. She attended North Fulton High School and then college at Wesleyan and Agnes Scott. Married on June 21, 1949, she and her husband Henry enjoyed over fifty years of marriage until his death in 2002. Henry often referred to her as “the cutest gal in Buckhead.” Joan raised her family in Atlanta and lived there until she moved to Brandon Wilde Retirement Community in Evans, Georgia in June, 2005 due to illness.
A loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Joan enjoyed her family most of all. She also treasured her many wonderful friends and spent time over the years painting, flower arranging, entertaining, playing bridge, playing golf and tennis, reading, as well as giving of herself to various organizations in Atlanta to include the Cottage Garden Club, Camp Fire Girls of America, Piedmont Hospital Auxiliary, Skyland Trail, investments clubs and various church groups. Her fabulous cooking skills were a delight to all and Henry was lucky enough to have a home cooked meal every night for over fifty years! They loved to travel and enjoyed many wonderful trips all over the world. Joan’s unwavering faith was most important to her and guided her throughout her life. She was an inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to cross her path and a shining, quiet, faithful follower of the Lord. She was a thoughtful, kind person who always put others before herself.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation and gratitude to the staff at Brandon Wilde and to her doctor, Robert Rychly for making Joan’s life as full and happy as possible during her extended illness.
Joan is survived by her son Stephen Coart Johnson of Atlanta, Georgia; her daughter Carol J. Taylor (George) of Highlands, North Carolina; her daughter Lynn J.
