August 8, 1924 – April 26, 2011
Born in Weston, Georgia, John Cox was destined to see the world. He grew up in Atlanta and Clayton County and was a proud graduate of Boys High. During WW II, John served as an officer in the US Navy. Returning to civilian life, he earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in business from DePauw University. His fascination with numbers, order and travel led him to work first with the United Fruit Company in Central and South America and later with the federal government in Washington, D.C. Retiring from the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the early 1980’s, John returned to East Point to live with his sister, Malissa Boatwright Cox. Being retired meant he had the time for his many volunteer activities. John was a dedicated and loyal volunteer with the Atlanta Audubon Society, Crossroads Community Ministry, the Carter Center, and St. Philip’s Cathedral Bookstore, among others. He was a long-time member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, where he was a communicant and lay Eucharist minister.
This wonderful conversationalist, loyal friend and man of convictions died Tuesday at South Fulton Medical Center from complications related to an infection. He is survived by his sister and mourned by her and his many friends. His memorial service will be at eleven o’clock in the morning on Monday, May 2nd, at St. Luke’s Episcopal, 435 Peachtree St. H.M. Patterson & Son, Spring Hill is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, his family would appreciate contributions to any of the organizations he supported.
