

John (Jack) Denny Margeson died Monday, Dec. 1, following a fall several weeks ago. He was 82. Jack was born to Dr. Robert M. and Linda M. Margeson on April 9, 1932 in Atlanta where he lived all his life except for a few years. He attended the Marist School and graduated with the first graduating class of Grady High School. After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He went to Georgia Tech where he lettered with the swim team, learned to play a winning game of pool and was a member of SAE fraternity where he made many lifelong friends. Jack majored in industrial engineering and finished in three years. His career was launched working in sales for several industrial enterprises, including Phillips & Brooks which he eventually owned and operated. After 25 years, he sold the company in 1989, had the foresight and entrepreneurial spirit to buy a building in Buckhead where his office, Long Point Investors, was housed.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers Dr. Robert M. Margeson, Jr., Dr. Ted Margeson, Dr. Richard C. Margeson and Mike Margeson. He is survived by his adored wife of 58 years, Jean Bowers Margeson, and their four children: Muffet (Rusty) Maier; Jack Jr. (Margaret); Helen Rossetti; and Billy (Georgia), all of Atlanta. Ten loving grandchildren who called him Big Guy and all of whom he adored, also survive him: Johnny and William Maier; Jack III, Sarah and Robert Margeson; Emily, Meg and Clay Rossetti; Margaret and Louise Margeson and step-grandchildren, Mary Hall and Freddy Hutton. Jack’s sister, Marilyn Sheats (Brewster) and his trusted and loved executive assistant, Merily Laube also survive him as well as numerous nieces and nephews. All are among the many who will remember Jack as hard-charging, fun-loving, smart, compassionate and kind.
Jack was a man’s man whose interests outside his family were business, golf, sports, competition – winning at cards! – and friends. He was a 40-year member of the Capital City Club, a charter member of the Atlanta Country Club and Pablo Creek Golf Club (Ponte Vedra, Fla.). He was a scratch or single-digit golfer for decades until 1999 when back surgery was the beginning of his declining health. Jack always did his best and was generous in many ways. He endowed a swimming scholarship at Georgia Tech; he gave to those he loved and those he didn’t know, always wishing to remain anonymous.
A graveside funeral will be held at Westview Cemetery, at 11 o'clock. officiated by The Rev. Geoffrey Hoare, rector of All Saints Episcopal Church. H. M. Patterson & Son - Spring Hill is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Alexander-Tharpe Fund at Georgia Tech, North Ave NW, Atlanta, GA 30332.
