John Maurice Mattingly

John Maurice Mattingly, son of the late Paul and Genevieve Mattingly, died on May 13, 2017 at his residence in Powder Springs, Georgia. He was an Evansville, Indiana native and was born on September 25, 1952. He graduated from William Harrison High School. He received a bachelor’s degree in education with a major in history from the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville. After several years of classroom teaching, he began a career with the MARTA Police Department, Atlanta, Georgia on October 25, 1985. He worked in the transit system until his retirement in 2008. He then returned to the Department as a Reserve Officer where he worked in the South Precinct until his death. He was a much loved officer and expressions of loss within the Department are widespread. In addition, History was one of his great passions, but people were his real love. His passing has left a huge hole in the many historical organizations in which he served as an officer and board member. As one member noted, he was one of those extremely rare individuals who literally everyone loved and he loved them in return. He is survived by a paternal uncle Gene Mattingly of Arlington, Virginia and brothers David Mattingly, Atlanta, Georgia, Stephen Mattingly, Granite Shoals, Texas, Thomas Mattingly, West LaFayette, Indiana and sisters Mary Ann Anderson, Blair, Nebraska and Jayne Kloster, Atlanta, Georgia. In addition, he is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Services for John will include visitation at H.M. Patterson and Son-Spring Hill Funeral Home, 1020 Spring Street, Atlanta, Georgia on Thursday, May 25 from 6-8 pm followed by the saying of the Rosary at 8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Cathedral of Christ the King, 2699 Peachtree Road Northeast, Atlanta, Georgia on Friday, May 26 at 10:30 am. A reception will be held at the Cathedral following the Mass. Burial will be in St, Joseph’s Cemetery, Evansville, Indiana on Tuesday May 30 following a Mass at St. Mary’s Church, 613 Cherry Street at 10:00 am.
