

He received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Georgia in 1960. He was the Drama director at DeKalb College (now Georgia Perimeter College) from 1969 to 1999. He was the author of many plays including The Beastly Purple Forest (marionettes), Peanut Butter and Ectoplasm, and Tokalitta. During his career he directed and/or performed in over 200 productions. He was a member of both the State and National Bicentennial Commissions in 1975. Member of the South Eastern Theater Conference (State representative 1971-73) and the Georgia Theater Conference (Executive board member 1970-73, 1979-82)
He is survived by his son, Stephen Downs, daughter-in-law, Mary Downs, three granddaughters, Ashley, Heather, and Jessica Downs, and by his many students and friends who remember him fondly and will miss him greatly.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 11th at H.M. Patterson and Son, Spring Hill Chapel from 6:00PM until 8:00PM. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the GPC Foundation: Jon Downs scholarship fund. Online condolences may be made at hmpattersonspringhill.com.
