Juanita H. Long, "Nita" age 92 of Atlanta, passed away peacefully Monday, April 3, 2017 at her longtime home. She was born in Dewy Rose, GA on September 24, 1924 to the late Dr. Guy C. Hewell and Eurene Brown Hewell. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Dr. Stewart M. Long who passed away June 29, 1977.
Nita spent her early years in Dewy Rose before relocating to Atlanta when her father began his medical practice. She always talked about having "indoor plumbing". She was a graduate of Girls High School,
then attended Agnes Scott for two years before going to the University of GA, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa. She enjoyed her Alpha Delta Pi sorority and was an officer her senior year.
Following the premature death of her husband, Nita went to work at Georgia Federal Savings in Morningside, where she grew up. After her son Guy started his business, she joined him and worked until she retired in 2012.
Nita loved her children and served on the Alter Guild at St. Luke’s and later served 40 years with The Daughters of the King at the Cathedral of St. Philip. She was an active member of the St. Veronicas Guild, Capital City Club, and Grant Valley Estates Home Owners Association.
She was a loyal and supportive daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who lead and exemplary life and was a great role model for all. An avid sports fan, she loved watching the Atlanta Braves, tennis, and GA Tech football. Besides her family, her other loves were her two beagles, Rebel and Bonnie Blue.
Survivors include her sons, Stewart M. Long Jr. (his wife Joan) and Guy H. Long (his wife Nell). Four grandchildren Michelle L Sellman (her husband Rich Sellman), Dr. Stewart M. Long III (his wife Melinda), Katherine L. Laney (her husband Chad), Page L. Gilliam (her husband Jon), and seven great grandchildren, Emma L. Tumbleston, Sophie L. Tumbleston, Stewart M. Long IV, Harrison B. Long, William Oliver Long, Caroline Stewart Laney, and Mary Alden Gilliam; and many nieces and nephews.
Very special thanks go out to her caregivers Valencia Almon, Monique Booker, Nellie Buchanan, and Shalandria Copeland, who provided excellent and loving care in her final years.
A memorial service will be held at the Cathedral of St. Philip, Atlanta, GA on Friday April 7, 2017 at 10am, with George Maxwell officiating in the Mikell chapel.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Piedmont Hospital Foundation, 2001 Peachtree Road, NW, Atlanta, Georgia, 30309 in memory of Stewart and Juanita Long.
Nita will be sorely missed, but never forgotten.
