Oct. 7, 1925 - April 23, 2013
Margaret Munnerlyn Haverty (Mrs. Rawson Haverty, Sr.) died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on April 23, 2013. She was 87.
She was born Margaret Middleton Munnerlyn in Charleston, SC on Oct. 7, 1925 to the former Margaret Elizabeth Springs and Benjamin Munnerlyn. She was a direct descendent of Henry Middleton of Middleton Place in SC, and Arthur Middleton, an original signer of the Declaration of Independence from SC.
Margaret, along with her younger sister, Jane M. Carter, was raised in Jacksonville, FL where their father, at age 19, had taken over the family shipping business, B.A. Munnerlyn Co.
Margaret, or “Munn” to her friends, attended Lee High School and later graduated summa cum laude from Sweet Briar College. She went on to study at Oxford College in England and traveled extensively in Europe, returning to teach school in Jacksonville.
After a courtship that began on a blind date arranged by her sister Jane and her husband, Frank Carter, she married Rawson Haverty on August 25, 1951.
Just married, they bought a house on Meredith Drive in Collier Hills. Their five children were born and raised in this still wonderful neighborhood. They later built and moved into their current residence, an authentic Georgian house designed by the renowned architect Jimmy Means. Margaret put her heart and soul into this gracious home, of which she was so proud.
Margaret and Rawson’s love affair lasted 55 years, from courtship and marriage, to raising a family. She is pre-deceased by her beloved husband and her grandson, Jeffrey Langford.
She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Jane Munnerlyn Carter, and her 2 sons, J. Rawson Haverty, Jr. and Ben Munnerlyn Haverty of Atlanta and her 3 daughters, Jane Middleton Haverty of Atlanta and Mary Elizabeth Haverty and Peggy Haverty Glover, both of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. And finally, her 12 adored grandchildren, Elizabeth Rawson, Robert H., and Patrick A. Glover, Stephen Langford, Smith, Rawson R., Tate and Cole Haverty, Cabell and Katie Mutter, and Hannah and Rhett Haverty.
Her family expresses deep gratitude to Hospice of Atlanta and to her devoted caregivers, Litorchia Richardson, Judith Cole, Sharon Childers, Elaine Dixon, Charmaine Clayton, Sherronda Edmonds, Angela Bogan and, most especially, Emma Gooden.
Funeral services will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 3465 Northside Drive, NW Atlanta, GA 30327 on Saturday, April 27, at 10:00 am. Following the service, private internment will be at Westview Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Jane Haverty, on Friday, April 26 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Margaret’s name to the Mary E. Haverty Foundation, c/o Financial Planning Partners, 4414 Dunmore Rd, NE, Marietta, GA. 30068.
