

She was the oldest daughter of Stavros Avgerinos of Lefkas Greece, a theologian and scholar and Olga Fiaboli of Ithaki, Greece. She grew up in Kefalonia, Greece and at the age of ten, the family moved to Athens, Greece where she obtained the remainder of her education. Maria was a graduate of the University of Athens School of Philology and also attended the French Academy for three years as well as the British Institute of Foreign Languages for three years. She also worked for the National Bank of Greece for five years.
In 1950, after the death of her beloved mother and when everyone was trying to go back to normal after the war, she left everything behind to come to the United States. Maria was witty and funny and had a zest for life. She loved and trusted people and cherished good friendships throughout the years. She was a loyal friend and very proud of her Greek heritage. Maria was also a longtime member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral and is survived by her daughter, Lia C. Gilmer. May her memory be eternal.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 25, 2025 at 11:00 am at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Atlanta with the funeral service following at 12:00 pm with Reverend Father Paul A. Kaplanis, Dean, and Reverend Father Christos P. Mars, Protopresbyter, officiating.
