

Marion Gaines Saulsbury died January 8, 2012, at age 86. She was one of the first women certified public accountants in South Carolina and North Carolina. Born in Columbia, South Carolina, she graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1945, Phi Beta Kappa, with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce, and she earned a Master degree in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina in 1964. From 1945 to 1963 she held several responsible positions in businesses and accounting firms, including as a founding partner of Fitzgerald & Company in Columbia, S. C. She then taught accounting at several colleges, including Winthrop College and Lander College, from 1965 until 1987, when she retired. She is survived by her husband, James Keene Saulsbury, of Austell Georgia, her daughter, Carol Fitzgerald Silva and husband Fernando Silva, of Atlanta, their children Jonathan Fitzgerald Silva, of Atlanta, Ed And Valerie Silva of Dalton and their children Henry and Emma June, and Alex and Rachel Silva of Johns Creek and their children Gavin and Elena, by her son T. Clark Fitzgerald III and his wife Diana, their son Thomas C. Fitzgerald IV and daughter Natalie D. Fitzgerald, by the children of her deceased son Gaines Marion Fitzgerald, C. Chelsey Fitzgerald and Gaines M. Fitzgerald Jr, both of Pine Mountain, and by her great-grandson Micaiah G. Fitzgerald.
A memorial service will be held at two o’clock Saturday, January 14 in the Riverview Room at Presbyterian Village. She will be buried on Sunday at Pine Mountain Valley Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Presbyterian Village Caring Hands Fund, 2000 EW Connector, Austell, GA, 30106.
