Mike was born in Nyack, NY where he lived for several years with his parents Ruth and John Ellington. Mike’s family moved throughout his school years following the assignments of his father in the US Air Force. His formative years in Pennsylvania were spent in pursuit of his lifelong dream to become a professional baseball or football player, but unfortunately his career was thwarted, when despite his determination and passion for football, he went unnoticed by Joe Pa at Penn State due to his diminutive size.
Mike lived and adventurous life filled with a youthful innocence and sense of enjoyment that contagiously spread to everyone who was blessed by his presence. He explored many opportunities which took him across the country and back, which he captured succinctly on his five page resume he saved on his computer. He never lacked enthusiasm and effort in everything in life from work, sports, friendships, and relationships. Everyone who came across his path was drawn in by his kindness, compassion, and attentiveness; he was first to arrive, always lent a hand, and didn’t leave until the party was over. He enjoyed his work, co-workers, and the purpose it brought to the moments of his life. His eternal brothers in Kappa Sig were a constant source of support, love, and eternal friendship throughout his life. His work families at Nieman Marcus, Home Depot, Fisk, Legacy, the Atlanta Braves, and Publix gave him endless hours of joy. His passion for sports didn’t die with the Penn State dream as he played the way he lived; hard and determined. He enjoyed skiing, golf, softball, and screaming at the TV for the Braves, Falcons, and Nittany Lions. His voice will linger in support forever.
Mike silently endured a challenging health journey throughout his life but seldom complained and isolated himself in trying to cure those ailments. His final silent prayers were answered when God finally relieved him of his pain in calling him to be with him.
Mike enjoyed incredible support and encouragement from his Aunt Katherine throughout his life. She sought to “channel” his efforts and pick him up in times of trouble. His love will forever be with her.
Upon finding out of his adoption at age 16, Mike began an exhaustive search for his biological family which ended in frustration that was reversed when his sister, Stacey, who had been on the same journey found him seven wonderful years ago. Once again, he added her family to his extended family as he dove right in to be a fantastic brother and uncle.
Michael is survived by his sister Stacey Bertotti, her spouse James, their daughters Grace Neven (17) and Megan Lou (16) of Stafford, Virginia and his aunt Katherine Tribble of Atlanta, Georgia.
