Rusty was born in Savannah, GA, on January 14, 1946, to William Alonzo Jones and Sarah Blount Massenburg Jones. He grew up in Atlanta with his brothers, Boyd Eugene Jones and Walter Jones. As a sophomore in high school, Rusty became the state of Georgia champion pole vaulter. His athleticism earned him a scholarship to Mississippi State University, where he later graduated with a Bachelor of Education.
Following college, Rusty entered military service. He was commissioned as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps, serving his country with honor. After his years in the Marines and in law enforcement, he built a diverse career in Atlanta. Yet his greatest legacy was not professional, but personal. For more than four decades in Atlanta, he devoted his time to helping others in recovery, drawing from his own experience to walk with countless men and women on their journeys to healing and reconciliation. Known for his wisdom, honesty, humility, and presence, he had the right words for those who needed them most.
Rusty was married earlier in life to Judith Lipscomb Jones and became the proud father of two sons, Matt (Laurie) Jones and Chris Jones.
He is survived by his sons, Matt (Laurie) Jones and Chris Jones; his brother Walter Jones; four grandchildren, Matthew (April), Benjamin, Jacob (Aimayia), and Claire (Mitch); and two great-grandchildren, Lukas and Lilith. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Sarah Jones, and by his brother Boyd Eugene Jones
A memorial service will be held at NABA Club 1809 Briarwood Rd NE, Atlanta on Saturday, September 20, 2025, with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. and the service at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Paul Palmer.
