Sophie Elizabeth (Betty) Young died peacefully at home on October 26, 2013. She was 98. Betty was born in Norfolk, Virginia on September 25, 1915, to Carroll Townshend Fugitt and Marian Forsdick Fugitt. Also preceding her in death were her four siblings: Dorothy Dade Fugitt, Marian Wood, Edith Nunnally and Townshend Fugitt, Jr. After 44 years of marriage, her husband, James Blake Young died in 1983. She had a special bond with her younger sister, Edith who was her roommate growing up on Alston Drive opposite the 11th green of the East Lake Country Club golf course. Edith and Betty were quite the pair of Fugitt widows over the last 30 years before Edith’s death in 2012.
Betty was a 1934 graduate of North Avenue Presbyterian School which later became Westminster. Named Most Athletic, she was the captain of the basketball and the swimming teams all four years of high school. She held the high jump and hurdles records until they were broken in the 1980’s. She even tried out for the Olympics in diving. Her friends from high school were dear to her throughout her life, and they gathered regularly until she became the only remaining member.
Betty Young was a lifetime resident of Atlanta as well as a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church where she served as a Stephens Minister. She was a cherished member of the Camellia Garden Club. She loved to garden and even cut the grass into her late 80’s. Her husband, Jimmy, was an only child and she lived, more or less peaceably, with her mother-in-law her entire married life. While it is not possible to earn your way to Heaven, she did. She was the mayor of Alton Road, living there for 64 years. Before she broke her hip (and for awhile afterward) she took daily walks around the Peachtree Battle neighborhood, always speaking to those she knew and those she didn’t. “It doesn’t cost a dime to greet someone”, she frequently said, encouragement passed down from her father.
She is survived by her three children, Carol Y. Hall, Blake Young, Jr. (Carol), and Zach Young (Studie) and eight grandchildren, Laura DeWitt (Jon), Judson Hall, David Hall (Pam), Blake, III (Catherine), Hoyt Young (Margaret), Mary Stuart Iverson (Joel), Zachry Young and Townshend Young, and 11 great grandchildren. The family wishes to express special thanks to her caregivers, Annie Johnson and Margaret Moore.
Her Memorial Service will be held at First Presbyterian Church at 11 AM on Wednesday, October 30 with visitation one hour before the service and a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 1328 Peachtree Street, NE, Atlanta, GA 30309-3209. Online condolences may be made at hmpattersonspringhill.com.
