Born in Atlanta, Georgia, to Frank Bartow Hester and Joyce Slate Hester, Susan Elmore passed away peacefully at home at the age of 69 on July 13, 2017. She attended Dykes High School, West Georgia College, and Georgia State University, where she was a member of Delta Zeta sorority. Early on in life she was a runway, print, and screen model in Atlanta.
All of this was secondary to a much larger life as a wife, mother, teacher, and homemaker. These are the things people remember most about her. Susan passed shortly after celebrating her 47th wedding anniversary with her devoted husband, who she referred to as the love of her life and best friend. Together they built a family, to which she devoted every ounce of her being. Her children were the light of her life and she gave them unconditional love that enabled them to go on to do great things. Beyond her family, she expressed her love for children through service to Peachtree Presbyterian Church, where she taught elementary Sunday school for many years.
This exquisite and beautiful person was known for her playfulness and kindness. She loved boating in the sun, was an avid skier, and taught many young people her beloved watersport at Lake Lanier and Lake Altoona. She often donned outrageous costumes at holiday gatherings and enjoyed adding humor and levity to all such occasions. For her, it was all about creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Wherever she went, she made everyone feel special, no matter their station in life.
She is survived by her husband, Jerome, and their three children, Scott, Bart (and his wife Joya Elmore), and Collins, as well as her sister Blanche Leigh Hester Wolfson (and her husband Robert Wolfson), brother Frank Bartow Hester, Jr. (and his wife Jeannine Hester), and sister-in-law, Marlene Melvin, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews: Jennifer, R. J., and Preston Haley; Jennings, Ashley, and Preston Hester; Tim and John Melvin; and Joshua, Olivia, Caleb, Julia, and Caitlin Melvin. She is also survived by Lisa Baehm, who she considered a member of the family.
As Susan requested there will be no funeral service or public memorial. Instead there will be a private family gathering in San Diego, which she considered her second home.
