

Funeral service will be at 2:00pm Thursday at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Gallant for Carl Douglas Conn, 80 of Gallant who passed away December 31, 2017. Officiating will be his grandsons, Jonathan Blakeley, Kyle Blakeley and Gavin Blakeley. Burial will be in Bethlehem Baptist Church adjoining cemetery. Morgan Funeral Chapel will be directing.
Carl Douglas Conn passed away on Sunday, December 31, 2017. He has fought a good fight, he has kept the faith and is now with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was born to J.T. & Audra Conn of Greasy Cove – Gallant, Alabama on Friday, January 22, 1937. Having red hair when he was born, he was known as “Red” Conn to those worked with him at Republic Steel.
Douglas was saved and joined Bethlehem Baptist Church at the age of 13. He was then baptized in the creek beside the church. Douglas graduated from Ashville High School in 1955 and then married his wife, Mattie Sue Green in September. He always loved Sacred Harp Singing and was Chairman of the Warrior River Sacred Harp Singing Convention at the age of 22. He was ordained as a deacon at Bethlehem Baptist Church in 1982, served as Sunday School Song Director for 20 years and always enjoyed class singing. He enjoyed fox hunting, and was a member of the Etowah Foxhunter Association. He taught his grandsons to love and participate with their own dogs winning top honors with True Grit Kennels.
He was preceded in death by his parents, J.T. & Audra Conn.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mattie Sue Green Conn, daughters, Chita Dianne (Waylon) Blakeley and Felisa Denise (Todd) Brothers. Granddaughter, Carmen Brothers; grandsons, Jonathan, Kyle and Gavin Blakeley; granddaughters-in-law, Lacey and Katey Blakeley; great-grandchildren: Audrie Leigh, John Tyler and Johnnie Caleb Blakeley. Sisters-in-law: Patricia (Ronnie) Warren & Mary (Charles) Simmons, Annie Sue Green, Ann Green and Selina Green; brothers-in-law: Guy (Elaine) Green and Rex (Donna) Green with a host of nieces and nephews. Sister at heart, Linda Thomas; brother, Glenn Conn.
Honorary pallbearers: Donald McClendon, Earl Dunn, Kenneth Lasseter and Eddie Entrekin
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
