Charles Excell Hester, 93, of Attalla passed away Sunday, April 4th, 2021. The family will receive friends from 9:00 to 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 7th at First Baptist Church of Attalla. A celebration of life service will immediately follow with Dr. Bryant Strain officiating. Concluding the service, a private family burial will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Excell was a highly touted athlete and 1948 graduate of Etowah High School where he received All-State and All-Southern honors for his football and basketball accolades. Hester was a key figure in Etowah High School’s lone state basketball championship for the 1947-1948 season in which he was name the Most Valuable Player, known today as “Mr. Basketball”. He attended Mississippi State University on a football scholarship where he suffered a career ending knee injury. He then enlisted in the United States Army where he served until 1951.
In addition to his athletic achievements and military service, Excell spent 38 years as a warehouse manager at Goodyear Tire & Rubber plant, returned to his alma mater as an assistant football coach, and was an active member of First Baptist Church of Attalla for over 65 years. Excell was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. He will be remembered for his strength, integrity, and impact he had on those in the Attalla community.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Drake Hester, and his daughter, Jan Hester Whisenant. He is survived by his son-in-law, Rowland Whisenant, grandson, Wade (Brittney) Whisenant, great-granddaughter, Jordan Jan Whisenant, and granddaughter, Ashleigh Whisenant.
