
Funeral will be at 3:00 PM Sunday at Chandler Mountain Baptist Church for Fred Hobert Rogers 91, of Steele who died on November 3, 2016 at his home on Chandler Mountain .Rev. Larry Mann will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. Morgan Funeral Chapel will be directing the service. Mr. Rogers was a veteran of World War II serving in the Marine Corps in the Pacific theater.
Mr. Rogers was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Zealous Ivanette Bearden Rogers; his parents, Henry Sylvester and Ella Victoria Rogers; brothers, Kemsey, Farmer and Henry Rogers; sisters, Dora Gilliland, Reba Dover and Jewel Smith and his nephew-brother, Kenneth Gilliland.
Mr. Rogers is survived by his daughters, Freda Joan Rogers and Rebecca Jane Redden (Donnie); son, Ronald David Rogers (Faye); brother, Hoover Rogers (Nell); grandchildren, Christopher Redden (Marcella), Joshua Redden (Terri); Mary Franklin and Amanda Rogers; great grandchildren , Ethan Redden, Elizabeth Franklin, Victoria Franklin, Abigail Dallmann, David Dallmann and Anna Redden and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Rogers was a devoted Christian. He taught Sunday school for 40 years at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Attalla and served as a deacon and sang in the choir. At the time of his death he was a member of Chandler Mountain Baptist Church. He loved the Lord and was a faithful student of the Bible. He was for many years a member of the Gideons. Mr. Rogers considered his Bible teaching ministry and his ministry with the Gideons to be God given privileges and callings.
He received both his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Jacksonville State University and taught school at Alma Hinson Junior High School in Attalla. He served that school as both assistant principal and principal. Mr. Rogers was also principal of Etowah Middle School and Curtiston Elementary School in Attalla before retiring in 1989. He saw his life’s work as an educator as a ministry given to him by the Lord. Mr. Rogers worked 11 years with AAA Pottery before beginning his career in education.
Mr. Rogers loved music. He sang in the Gospel Five quartet for many years. He also played the guitar and the mandolin and enjoyed many “picking and grinning” sessions with his family and friends. In his retirement he enjoyed farming and travelling with his family and found much pleasure and delight in his grandchildren and great grandchildren. In all his endeavors he thoroughly enjoyed the people with whom he worked with as well as those whom he served.
Deep appreciation and heart felt love to Dr. Debora Reiland. Mr. Rogers always felt that she was part of his family and always considered her and her staff as that. Also his family thanks Alacare Hospice. They are great and wonderful. We could not have made this journey without them.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial gifts be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas offering, to Chandler Mountain Baptist Church or the church of your choice.
Pallbearers will be Joey Bearden, James Phillips, Tim Phillips, Chris Redden, Josh Redden Dwight Rogers
Honorary Pallbearers will be Ethan Redden and David Dallman
The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 PM-3Pm at Chandler Mountain Baptist Church.
