December 6, 1948 – May 15, 2025
George Alan Hilley, known affectionately to those close to him as “Sak” or “Butterball,” passed away on May 15, 2025, in Gadsden, Alabama, at the age of 76. Born in Gadsden on December 6, 1948, George lived a life defined by hard work, resilience, and selflessness.
George spent most of his life working for Dawson Development Properties and took tremendous pride in a hard day’s work. With calloused hands and a generous heart, he could fix or build anything—and did so often, without hesitation, for family, neighbors, or anyone in need. He believed in doing things the right way and never shied away from getting his hands dirty.
He was a devoted father to Carolyn, Jimmy, and Wynter (Jeremy), and a proud stepfather to Ronnie (Shell) and Bobbie (Billy). His love extended to his grandchildren—Tammy, Christian (Jerardo), Michael (Kaitlyn), Zachary, Lauren, Christopher, Blake (Chandel), Brandon, and Briona (Dustin)—and his many great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him endless joy.
George shared his life with his beloved partner, Linda, whose companionship brought him great happiness and comfort. Their bond was built on laughter, loyalty, and the simple joys of everyday life.
George proudly served his country as a United States Marine and was a Vietnam veteran. He was honored with the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Rifle Marksman Badge during his service and never missed an opportunity to fly the American flag at his home—a daily reminder of his pride in being an American.
When he wasn’t working, George found peace and joy in the outdoors. He loved riding the Coosa River in his boat, tending to his yard with care and pride, or escaping to the mountains or beach for a quiet getaway. On Sundays, he could be found watching NASCAR or cheering on his beloved Alabama Crimson Tide—Roll Tide forever. His faithful dog, Bella, was always by his side, a constant and loving presence in his daily life.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Newton and Vera Hilley, and his brothers, Larry and Wayne. He is survived by his sisters Bobbie Lee and Pam, and a large, loving family who will miss him dearly.
Per his wishes, no formal services will be held. Those wishing to honor George’s memory are encouraged to make donations to the Big Oak Boys Ranch in Gadsden or to any Veterans’ charity—a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much and asked for so little.
George Alan Hilley will be remembered for his strong hands, soft heart, and the legacy of love and loyalty he leaves behind.
