

Mary “Joan” Cagle, age 72 passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 27, 2018 at Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama after a prolonged yet courageous battle with cancer. She was born March 12, 1946 to W.E. and Sue (Mayo) Payne. She was a 1964 graduate of Altoona High School, marrying her high school sweetheart, Wilber “Bug” Cagle.
Joan’s life was one of service. She was a selfless caretaker for her grandparents and later her parents. For many years she was employed as Director of the Morton’s Chapel Senior Nutrition Center dedicating her days to serving the elderly of her community. Following the first of several cancer diagnoses, she made and donated decorative turbans for other cancer patients in treatment.
She was preceded in death by her parents, W.E. and Sue Payne; daughter, Juanice Cagle Jones; son, Roger Cagle and nephew, Matthew Bynum.
Joan will be lovingly remembered by her husband of fifty-six years, Wilber “Bug” Cagle, three grandsons, Casey Jones, Cody Self, and Andrew Cagle; granddaughter, Cheyenne (Mikey) Wilson and beloved great grandchildren, Dallas Wilson, Braylee Wilson, and Kalia Cagle. Her memory will be cherished by her sister, June (Philip) Bynum and special sisters in law, Cindy Ellison, Cathy Massey and Lisa Johnson. Joan also leaves behind numerous relatives and friends who will miss her greatly.
The family wished to extend their gratitude to Dr. Allen Yielding, the staff at Hematology and Oncology Associates of Alabama and the treatment team at Brookwood Medical Center.
A celebration of Joan’s life will be held graveside on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at Samuels Chapel Church Cemetery. The service will begin at 11:00 A.M. with Bro. Freddie Keener officiating. Morgan Funeral Chapel and Crematory directing. Flowers will be accepted.
