

Nellie J. Messer, 73, of Southside, passed away at McGuffey Healthcare in Gadsden, Sunday, August 6, 2023. A chapel service for Mrs. Messer will be held at Morgan Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, at 4:00 pm. Visitation in the chapel will be from 3:00 pm until the time of the funeral service at 4:00 pm with Bro. Keith Clay to officiate. A private family burial will follow at Williams-Southside Memorial Park. Morgan Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
She was born on August 11, 1949, in Gadsden, Alabama. Nellie was a devoted wife, who was married to Robert J Messer for 55 years. She raised two daughters while supporting Robert as he served as an MSG. in the US Army. Nellie moved to Kansas, Germany, Florida, and Alabama working on every army base as their family relocated during his service. Along with raising her two daughters, she raised 3 of her grandchildren, adopting 2 of them as her own. She enjoyed being active at the First Baptist Church of Southside and she loved spending time with her great-grandkids. Nellie was always known for feeding anyone that came into her house, being able to talk and relate to anyone, and finding a way to make them laugh. She will be missed by her loved ones and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Messer; parents, James and Dorthey Peters; of Gadsden, AL., two infant sons; one granddaughter, Kimberly Jo; and numerous brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her daughter, Rhonda Faye Craft (Kim) Albertville, two sons, Mathew Messer, North Carolina; and Jarrod Messer, Southside; grandsons, Christopher Messer (Emily), Texas; and Jimmy Messer (Nicole); granddaughter, Ariel Jo Kitchens (SSG. Steven D. Kitchens); great-granddaughters, Madelyn Messer, Camille Messer, Mahaylla Messer and Aubree Darnell; and sister-in-law, Rachel Bradshaw (Howard), Bonifay, Fla.
Pallbearers will be members of her immediate family.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and caretakers at McGuffey Healthcare for their love and care during her time there. The family wishes to extend a very special thank you to Janet Hasse for her love and continued care of Nellie, especially after the passing of her husband, Robert. There are no words to truly express just how valuable your love and commitment meant to them and us.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
