Thomas "Tommy" Joe Maeger, age 78, of Gadsden, Alabama passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2024. Visitation for Mr. Maeger will be held at Morgan Funeral Chapel, Attalla, on Saturday, May 25, 2024 from 9am to 11 am. A Graveside service will follow at Williams-Southside Memorial Park. Rev. Scott Hassell to officiate.
Tommy was blessed by living a full life. A lifelong Southside, Alabama resident, graduate of Southside High School, and was a current member of First Baptist Church of Southside. Tommy went on to be with his Lord this week and is in a better place; after dealing with a degrading disease over the past few years. Tommy was retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber in Gadsden and had enjoyed retirement and his passion of playing golf. Tommy was currently married and supported by his wife Sybil for the past 12 years, Sybil’s family includes her son, Brian Jones (Melissa), and daughter, Kristin Fanning (Michael). Sybil was a true blessing to Tommy and his family after the passing of his first wife Louise, in 2011. They had opportunities to travel, enjoy baseball and football games, and spending time at church. Sybil was a trooper learning all about those Atlanta Braves and Alabama football. They enjoyed their church, Sunday School, friends, and living in their beloved Southside.
Tommy’s first love was his wife of 38 years, Louise (Brogdon). He met her and her son, David Brogdon (at age 13) from her previous marriage in 1973. Tommy was determined to become the Dad that David did not have; due to his real father’s debilitating Huntington's’ disease. Tommy had the family in church every Sunday, coached all the baseball and basketball teams, and was the biggest fan of David and all the grandchildren over the years. Tommy was affectionately known as “Paw Paw”, to David and his wife Suzanne Brogdon and their three children (grandchildren) Lindsay Stroup (Will), Emily Dixon (Cannon) and Ethan Brogdon (Kensley). As the family grew over time; Paw Paw was up to 5 great grandchildren; Barrett, Lillian and Jacob Stroup, Evelyn and Raleigh Dixon, and soon to be Ella Mae Brogdon (number 6) due in just a few weeks.
Tommy was preceded in death by his dad, Earnest (Shag) Maeger, mother, Christine Maeger and brother Ronnie Maeger (Brenda).
Even though Tommy has left the earth, he will be forever in our thoughts. His passion for life, his church, golf, and Alabama football will hang with everyone that knew him. He never missed a grand kids’ ball game or sporting event. If there are golf courses in heaven, he has already completed a couple of rounds. His family will remember his last words, when asked about the Alabama t-shirt he was wearing; he said “Roll Tide”. That says a lot about a guy that was having trouble remembering things toward the end, but still had the zest for life. Tommy will be missed by all that knew him. He was a man of loyalty, conviction, principles and never wavered. Some would say stubborn, but when a person lives by a moral compass; you have to respect that.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to First Baptist Church of Southside, 2560 Mountain View Dr., Southside, AL 35907.
Morgan Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
