It is with heavy hearts and a mix of sadness and relief that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Dorothy Kay (Turner) Porath on February 4, 2025. She passed away in her sleep at home in Grass Valley, California. Kay was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend Kay was truly a special woman who brought joy and love to everyone around her.
Kay was born in Tuolumne, California, a small logging town she fondly remembered despite the hardships of her childhood. She often spoke of how challenging yet rewarding her upbringing was, surrounded by close-knit family and lifelong friends. Kay proudly shared stories of her time as the Tuolumne Lumber Jubilee Queen, a title that came with a trip to Disneyland as a cherished memory for her and her family.
After graduating from Summerville High School, Kay pursued a career in cosmetology. She worked as a stylist, educator, and business owner, operating her own salon in Auburn, California. Her passion for her craft kept her working well into her 80s, giving countless clients a fresh and stylish look.
Kay married Francis Benkert Porath, and together they built a loving family. They started their life together in South Lake Tahoe, where they welcomed their children, Tammy Joe and Steve. In 1967, they moved to Auburn, California, where they lived for 11 years before embarking on the bold adventure of building their dream home from scratch on Mt. Vernon Road. Despite having no experience in construction, they succeeded through determination and hard work.
Kay was a loving and devoted grandmother, sister, and aunt. She prioritized her family above all
else and maintained close connections with loved ones throughout her life. Known for her warmth and unwavering support, Kay’s kindness and thoughtfulness touched the lives of everyone she knew.
After losing her husband of 39 years in June 1999, Kay found companionship with Pat, whom the family called lovingly Lover Boy. For 15 wonderful years, they shared adventures, from scenic drives and picnics to racing and exploring Grass Valley in Pat’s classic car. Pat became her caregiver in her later years, offering her love, care, and support until the very end. The family is deeply grateful for all he did to enrich Kay’s life.
Kay is survived by her stepdaughter, Carla (husband Robert); her sons, Joe Porath (wife Tammy)
of North Fork, Virginia, and Steve Porath (wife Theresa) of Lincoln, California.
