I am truely sorry about Fred! My name is Tom Podnar and went to school with Fred.  I came to St. Joseph Curch in 8th grade moving from Ohio where I lost My father at age 12. Fred and I were good friends in 8th grade and high school. After that I lost contact with him until he used to visit his mother and I seen him in church a couple of times. I am now 84 and a retired fireman from Gary.
I was googling people one day and sorry to see he passed.  where did the years go?

BARRY (for that's what we called you "back in the day"), you were a wonderful cousin and my brothers "Robbie" and "Griggsie" and I always looked forward to getting a visit from you in Miller or being lucky enough to see you in Glen Park. You always included some time spent with my dad, and I could tell from his smiling eyes and confidential tone that he knew you were something special in this world. You were always destined for police work, and from these many tributes I know you "served and protected" in a way that would have popped the brass buttons off your dad's chest. To Fred's brothers and sister, thank you for sharing him with us. We loved him too.

Although I didn't know Cousin Fred well growing up in Indiana, we got to know one another well upon my move to California in which Fred was instrumental almost 40 years ago.   Since then we became closer not only as family, but as friends as well.  In CA we were fortunate to share many good times together over the years:  family occasions, gatherings with close friends, joyful Christmas & fun Halloween parties, vacations in Mexico and Las Vegas, as well as quiet lunches and dinners together.  And in more recent times, visits to his lovely house in Auburn, texts of rare snowfalls in Auburn, and conversations about gardening.  I will always remember with great fondness Fred's smile, warm hugs, and sage advice.  As Fred would say to me "Susie, life is what you make it!"  Well, Fred truly made the most of life as we all know!  My condolences to the family! Love and miss you Fred!  Cousin Sue & Tom


I wouldn’t be the woman I am today without Reno. 
He listened to me, taught me, loved me, and was always there for me. 
Reno and I loved Dingus Mcgees and we would sit at “our” table every time(pictured above), and we would sit and talk about life for hours,… 
Reno was the first person I called when my mother passed away, and he was there for me while I grieved over the loss. He watched me grow from a girl to a woman over the years, helping me through breakups, family issues, and personal struggles….  
I value the time and friendship I got to have with Reno. I will tell my kids about him one  day… I thank God for bringing him to me. 

I love you Reno, and I miss you constantly, everyday, every moment, my heart misses you so much. 



My deepest heart felt sympathy for your lost. We've all grieved with the loss of loved ones, painful to the heart.

Fred came to the Bunco section in 1980 as the Officer In Charge (OIC), overseeing 20  skilled investigators consisting of the consumer unit, auto fraud unit + and the major frauds unit consisting of 7 highly skilled detective III's, all versed in forgery, internal fairs, computer fraud and other specialties. I, Bob Nieto
oversaw this unit, when Fred came on board. Although Fred was not versed in many of these specialty types of investigations, he was not only eager to learn, but to command the fraud unit.
 Fred was bright, caring, soft spoken and very supported of the fraud unit. 
Fred and  I, often went to the Police Academy for lunch. It was convenient, quick, inexpensive, but always ran into someone or friend to say hello and catch up (no pun intended). Fred loved to eat the bread and lots of butter and would always say, "that's why I ran in those mini triathlons to burn it off. I always tried to complete the tri, not to win, but to finish" Fred trained often by swimming, running and cycling to be fit to compete. I aways gave him credit and admiration for his dedication.

Even though, Fred did not investigate  the on-going cases, when they were competed and often times, news worthy, he could review the facts of the case and present them in such detail as if he had been the investigator, to the Chief of the news media. This
showed his dedication and interest of the unit and support.

We had good times with the unit often times putting together a ''Bunco Fiesta" as we called it, by contacting other law Enforcement units, such  district attorney's we dealt with, sheriffs units, city attorneys, and others, gathering at the police academy. We'd cook up steaks, enjoy commandership, laugh and also have a few liquid libations to top it off. 
Don't forget the tennis tournaments, slow pitch games and just getting together at the police lounge.


Papa... I don't even know where to begin...
I guess all I can say is Thank You.  
Thank you for your Love, your compassion, and your sincerity.  Thank you for accepting me.  Thank you for raising such an amazing daughter that would become my bride.  Thank you for blessing me with your approval to marry your baby daughter, Sarah.  Thank you for being a positive role model.  Thank you for your service to our Nation, and to the City of Los Angeles.  Thank you for moving to Auburn to be closer to your daughters.  Thank you for always being so welcoming, kind, and supportive.  Thank you for showing me how to be a father of daughters.  Thank you for your humbleness.  Thank you for all the laughs.  Thank you for making me feel like family.  Thank you for always opening your heart, your soul, and your home to me.  I could go on and on!   I appreciate you Papa.  I know you believed in me and always wanted me to be the best that I can.  You wanted the best for everyone and I think that is what makes you truly special.  You have taught me so much about life...lessens that can't be learned in a book.  I cherish the conversations and moments we had sitting in your living room and around the dinner table.  I am forever grateful to have you as my Father-in-law and the Papa to my children.  I promise to never forget you.  I promise to keep your legacy alive and continue to celebrate you.  I promise to keep loving, comforting, and supporting your baby daughter, Sarah.   I promise to do my best...for you, Sarah, and your grandchildren.  

I know that your are in Christ's hands now.  I pray that you are in Heaven and dancing with your mother who I know you missed dearly.  Until we meet again...Thank you, and I love you.

For years I would make my annual trip to Fred's house in Glendale to do his taxes. We would spend about 5 minutes talking about his information and the rest of the 2-4 hours we would kick around life. He would walk me around his house showing me the improvements that he did around the house and in the backyard. I once affectionately referred to him as my second father, to which he responded, "I'm not that old, think of me as a much older brother." I will miss his warm smile, good advice, his friendship and the many good times we shared. God bless you Fred.  

I have the pleasure of being married to Fred's daughter, Jennifer. I'll never forget the first time I met him. Jennifer and I were dating, soon to be engaged, and the time was right to meet her father. Jennifer had arranged a dinner for the three of us, and I was very nervous leading up to the event to say the least. Knowing that Fred was a retired LAPD policeman, I knew he would be tough on me, and I was right, at first. 
On the day of the dinner, Jennifer and I were standing in the reception area of the restaurant awaiting her father’s arrival. As I paced nervously, I noticed a bright red corvette pull up at the curb, as if the driver owned the place. As it did so, Jennifer said, “That’s my dad.” 
The door of the car swung open, and I watched this distinguished looking man emerge as if in slow motion, his white hair and mirrored sunglasses gleaming in the LA sun. As he strolled toward the door of the restaurant, I couldn’t help but notice his worn, black leather jacket and heavy, ass-kicking leather boots.  As I watched him stroll toward me, I said to myself, “That’s her father? Oh man, I am in BIG trouble!”  
And I was, for about ten minutes. Once inside the restaurant, he pulled off his sunglasses, looked me straight in the eye with those deep blue eyes of his and extended his hand, saying, “I’m Fred. Nice to meet you.” After a terse exchange involving some posturing, chest beating and roaring, on both sides, all the bravado quickly faded, and I began to get a glimpse of the man that Fred was: someone of great character who cared deeply for his family and friends.
Over the years Fred became a father to me, offering guidance and assistance in many forms in everything from financial management, child-rearing to automobile maintenance to gardening. I came to value our relationship dearly and did (and do) my best to emulate all that he was to the world. We had many, many laughs, and shared many a meal together.
I’ll miss you Fred. Thank you for all you've given us.

“You can call me Fred.... or you can call me Freddie!..... and you  can call me Frederick.... but,  you doesn’t has to call me Mr. Reno!!!”
Dad was fun. Dad used to mimick certain actors and other icons of his time just to make his kids laugh.  On the worst of days, my Dad would always make me laugh. Dad was always there- inquiring, confirming, suggesting and making sure things were going right for us. When I had my own child, Dad was there the whole time with me in the labor room at the hospital. When I became  a single mom, Dad made sure my child’s needs were met financially. When I decided to get a higher education, Dad made sure I was able to do so.  Dad was my hero. For the rest of my life, no love will surpass the love Dad and I shared - and in my heart is where that  great love will always be.

There was one supervisor who especially stood out  when I was with LAPD. That was Lieutenant Fred Reno. I recall his first day at Bunco-Forgery Division (BFD).  He settled in quickly due to his effectiveness as a communicator and manager. He was also an ideal team leader. When we had meetings we could sense that Fred was actively listening to us.  He mentioned once that it would be nice if we could have a place that was private so confidential matters could be discussed. That statement generated some discussion amongst his detectives. This led to all of us participating in building an office that provided privacy within the main office “on our own time”. This was a testament to how much Fred was regarded and respected. His management style and leadership skills were the reason for the high morale in the Section. He truly cared about his people. My best time at LAPD was working for Fred in the Bunco Section.  My greatest memories  were attributed to Fred!”  I retired in 1992 and Fred retired in 1993. We kept in touch on a regular basis throughout the years. We had conversations when he was in hospice and he never complained. We reminisced about our families and the job.
GOD BLESS YOU FRED. THANK YOU FOR BEING SUCH A GREAT BOSS AND FRIEND.

My sincere condolences go out to Fred's family and friends.  I know you are very proud of him, as well you should be.  I was proud to have worked for him for over 15 of my 25 years on the Department in different assignments.  I remember walking with him to Personnel Division on his last day on the job before retiring.  He was highly respected and we all enjoyed working for him.  I especially admired his character and devotion to doing the right thing.  So sorry for your loss. 

My Uncle Fred was a great man and one of the most compassionate people I know.  I remember taking my wife to Indiana for the first time to meet my family.  I'll never forget when she met Uncle Fred.  She held her hand out out for a shake.  He smiled, wrapped his arms around her and gave her a big kiss on the lips!  He said something to the extent of, "Honey, we're family.  Give me a kiss!"   But that was Uncle Fred.  It didn't matter how long he had known you or how long it had been since he had seen you, you better be ready for that bear hug and kiss on the lips.  I love you Uncle Fred!

Dearest Dad,

I will always miss you  & will think of you constantly. Your impact on my life was enormous! I love you soo much it hurts, I will cherish and remember all of our special moments together! We cried together, laughed a lot, have our “ Meet Joe Black” moment and “ Frank & Judy” will live for an eternity! My heart aches and my tears are dropping because even though you always said I “ go with the flow” , I am not going with this flow so well. I miss you and love you MORE. Love, your baby daughter, Sarah! 

Fred was the oldest of us four kids.  Fred was our Big Brother.  On a wall in his room was a photograph of him pole vaulting.  It may have been the vault that earned his “Letter” W.  There was also an essay he authored that won a 1st Prize Award.  It was on Character.
Fred was a renaissance man of strength and character.

Fred was my college professor back in 1995 when I studied Criminal Justice at Glendale Community College.  We became fast friends.  He was one of the best teachers I had and he was such a kind human being.  We kept in touch over the years and he was always concerned about how my life was going and showed genuine care for me.  I considered him a dear friend.  I appreciated him so much.  My deepest condolences to his family.  God Bless.
