Obituary for George Ovcin
George Ovcin (84) of Auburn, California passed away August 27, 2022, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. He was born in Parage, Serbia on July 14, 1938 to Zarko and Smilja Ovcin.
George’s parents accepted the Seventh-day Adventist faith the year he was born. They instilled Christian values in their children at an early age, and these values would guide George throughout his life. In his life, he strove to instill these values in his children and grandchildren as well. He was a deeply committed Christian and lived what he believed.
He immigrated to Canada in 1963, where he met the love of his life, Lorraine Madland, and they were married in Sept. 1967. They moved to the Los Angeles area, where they started their lives together. George and Lorraine were blessed with two daughters, Melinda and Michelle, and soon after, moved to Paradise, California, where they spent the next 40 years raising their daughters and making lifelong friends.
George was trained as shoemaker in Serbia but became a dental lab technician while in Canada. Ultimately, he owned his own dental lab, in Paradise California for most of his career, until his retirement in 2003.
In 2000, he and Lorraine became the proud grandparents of Christopher, and then Emelia, Sylvia and Marisa soon joined the ranks of grandchildren in the years that followed. They brought him much joy during the past 22 years, and he was very proud of them all.
In 2015, George and Lorraine moved from Paradise to Auburn, California, so that they could be closer to their daughter, Michelle’s family. In 2018, California’s deadliest fire all but destroyed their beloved hometown of Paradise. They were grateful to have moved away prior to the fire but were heartbroken for all their friends’ losses and the loss of so many aspects of their Paradise years.
Sept. 3 would have marked 55 years of marriage for Lorraine and George. They lived a very full life together with God providing them both the strength and courage they needed to meet the many challenges of life along the way. He will be missed by his friends and family, but his legacy as a man of principle, hard work, and Faith will live on in the lives of those who knew and loved him.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Zarko and Smilja Ovcin; and his brother-in-law Peter Ovcin. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Lorraine Ovcin (Madland); daughters Melinda Adams and husband David and Michelle Fiess and husband Kyle; grandchildren Christopher Adams, Emelia, Sylvia and Marisa Fiess; sisters Melina Ovcin and Connie Danilov and husband, Mike; nephews Jack Danilov and Aleks Ovcin; and niece Vesna Sherman. He is also survived by many extended family members.
The funeral service was held at the Sacramento Yugoslavian Seventh-day Adventist Church on Wednesday Sept. 7th, with a private family burial that followed at the Newcastle Cemetery, in Newcastle, California.
For those wishing to honor George, the family suggests that donations may be made in his memory to either Maranatha Volunteers International, or the Sacramento Yugoslavian SDA Church (Serbian Mission Project).
