“Friend to All”
July 29, 1939 - April 26, 2021
Kerrie Nash, known as “Chew” (in earlier years) and “the Mayor” (by all on the Delta Loop), died of heart failure on April 26th at age 81.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Linda; his beloved sons Anthony Defro (Sandra), Kelvin (Jennifer) and Julian (Jessica); his beautiful grandchildren Christina, Christopher (Chanel), Nick and Dorian and great-grandson Patrick; and he is now happily reunited with his precious daughter, Lisa, and his beloved mother, Bessie, and sister, Betty, who went before him. Kerrie and Linda were together for 50 years.
He grew up in Foresthill, California. As a young athlete, Kerrie played football and ran track at Placer High School. After graduating from high school, he proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1960 to 1966, and has kept countless people entertained with his military stories!
While recuperating from a motorcycle accident that almost took his life in 1973, he went back to complete his degree in social work at San Francisco State University.
After graduating, he worked as a probation officer and with troubled youth. He then worked with the deaf and deaf/blind, and for almost 25 years was a social worker at Villa Fairmont, a mental health hospital in San Leandro.
He ended his career as a private fiduciary before retiring to his beloved Delta in 2009. He and Linda (and Julian) had visited from San Leandro almost every weekend since 1990.
Few could top the Mayor’s fried fish, chicken and porkchops; and his pinto beans and black-eyed peas were legendary!
There was nothing he enjoyed more than porch sitting and all that it entailed (one day he talked about life for an hour-and-a-half with a young stranger who just happened to be walking down the stairs). He enjoyed watching the geese, egrets, blue herons, turkey hawks and countless other birds across the water, as well as his hummingbirds on the patio.
Kerrie loved to fish. He watched any and all sports on tv (especially his 49ers) with friends on the porch, rain or shine, all year round. He was obsessed with the weather and any weather reports. He had an app that tracked planes that were flying by, liked listening to oldies on YouTube, would wave to all the locals who drove by on the road above, and got the biggest kick out of it when the Delta firemen called out from their fire trucks, “Hey Mayor” as they passed by!
The Mayor was a legend in local establishments and will always be remembered for his Friday afternoon meetings on the porch!
A celebration of his life will be held Thursday, July 29th, on what would have been his 82nd birthday, at Korth’s Pirates’ Lair on the Sacramento Delta. He would want you to be there!
