Mary Dasher was born Mary Elizabeth Sparks on April 26, 1923 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. She was the youngest of eight children, both her parents came from pioneer families who grew up in what was at the time the Indian Territory before it became the state of Oklahoma. Upon graduating from high school, Mary moved to California where she enlisted in the Navy. She serviced in the Waves during World War II as a nurse. Upon leaving the service in October 1945, Mary resided in Auburn until her death on October 14, 2011. Upon leaving the service Mary used her GI Bill to help her earn a pilot’s license. She worked in the medical field for several local Auburn doctors training nurses and staff. She eventually joined the Placer County Welfare Department as staff. She worked for the county until her retirement in 1983.
In 1947, Mary married Ralph Dasher in Auburn. They were married until 2007 at the time of Ralph’s death. Mary is survived by her two sons, Harry of San Diego and Allan of Auburn. Throughout her life Mary’s passion was children and young people. She was a Cub Scout Leader, active member of the local Elementary and Placer High School Parents and Teachers Organizations and served for many years as a 4-H Project and Community Club Leader. She was responsible for organizing the Auburn Town and County 4-H Club. She also served on the County Retired Employees Association Board.
With her husband she was a member of the Auburn Jeep Club and the first woman to drive the entire route of the annual Jeep Jamboree over the Sierras. Mary was also involved in the Auburn District Fair and in 1968 created the role of “Diamond Lil” for the Auburn District Fair.
A memorial service will be held November 5, 2011 at 2pm at Chapel of the Hills, 1331 Lincoln Way, Auburn, CA. Arrangements under the direction of Chapel of the Hills, Auburn, CA.
