

Charles Nixon Bates “Spud” 39, entered eternal rest at Doctor’s Hospital, March 27, 2021. “Spud” as he was affectionately known, was born in Augusta, Georgia to the late John A. Bates Sr. and Helen Woods. Spud graduated from Burke County High School in 2001 and lived in the Blythe/Hephzibah area all his life. He participated in Taekwondo, Special Olympics and was very proud that he won many ribbons and trophies. He was extremely close to his twin brother Harold Carlton Bates and his faithful sidekick Keegan Barefield.
Spud did not let his handicap stop him from enjoying life which he lived to the fullest. Always laughing and joking he had his own Youtube Channel called “Big Man Spud”. He also loved his family, fishing, photography, Chuck Norris, the mountains and Jesus! Beloved by his whole family Spud was the life of the party. He was always joyful at Christmas time, as he loved to give and receive gifts.
Spud is preceded in death by his father John A. Bates Sr. and stepfather Eric C. Woods (Daddy Eric). Those left to cherish his memories include his mother, Helen Woods, paternal grandmother Hazel Laube, four brothers, Harold Carlton Bates (Kelley), John A. Bates Jr. (Rebecca), Richard Rowe and Bryan Rowe. Spud is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 3, 2021, at 2pm at Elliott Sons Chapel on Lumpkin Road. The family will receive friends two hours prior at the Funeral Home.
