David Alvin Whittington of Augusta Georgia passed away on Friday, August 29, 2014. David was born on February 24, 1946 in Creston, Iowa. He grew up on his family farm in Diagonal, Iowa and went to Diagonal High School. He served in the United States Army from 1964-1967. He moved his family to Augusta, Georgia in 1971 and joined the Augusta Police Department. In his 14 years with the department he rose to the rank of Detective Sergeant on the Vice and Narcotics unit. In 1984 David became the department head for the City of Augusta’s maintenance department where he worked until his retirement in 1996. David was past Master of Fleming Masonic Lodge #718.
David is survived by his wife Kathleen Whittington, two daughters, Sandy Stow (Robert) of Akin, S.C., and Michelle Johnson of Columbus, GA. and four grandchildren David “Alex” Stow, Taylor Marie Stow, Katlin Mariah Whittington, and Evan Lane Johnson, his great-granddaughter, Livia Stow, his brother John Whittington of Diagonal, Iowa.
David is preceded in death by his parents Howard and Crystal Whittington of Diagonal, Iowa and his sister Katherine Larson of Farnhamville, Iowa.
David enjoyed being with his family, attending Burns United Methodist Church, growing an awesome garden and lawn, taking care of his home and most of all going fishing.
Friends and family are invited to attend the memorial service on Friday, September 5, 2014 at 4 p.m. in the Chapel of Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Lumpkin Road.
In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Augusta Wounded Warriors.
