Margaret was born on August 25, 1954 in Ft. McArthur, California to the late Mr. and Mrs. Carl Morrison Allen, Jr. She grew up in Wilmington, NC and graduated from Converse College in 1976 with a degree in Biology. Margaret taught Biology and Agricultural Science at Butler and Hephzibah High Schools in Augusta for ten years.
Margaret filled her house and life with humor and laughter. Her sense of humor was never more greatly displayed than at Halloween when she, Margaret Dunstan and Marsha Shlaer dressed up as Miss Betty, the Professional Mourners, the Singing Nuns and the Biker Chicks, and performed their annual trick-or-treat antics. She was a devoted soccer, wrestling, ballet and PTA Mom for Carl, Elizabeth and their friends. When their friends became adults, she became a close friend and confidant to that next generation. She knew no strangers, and had the ability to relate to people at whatever age or position she encountered them. She was always kind, always generous in spirit and purse. She was always the first one to lend aid and comfort to her friends and family when they were in need.
Margaret was a highly organized and committed community volunteer and leader, having served on the Boards of Directors of Girls, Inc., the Augusta Red Cross, the Augusta Ballet, and the Augusta Symphony Guild, of which she was President-Elect when she became ill. She was Chairwoman of the 2008 Augusta Symphony Cotillion and Co-Chair of the Augusta Symphony 50th Anniversary Gala. She is a former co-chair of the Summerville Neighborhood Association Tour of Homes. She chaired the Doctor’s Ball that benefited St. Joseph Hospice for two years and was a former member of the Junior Leagues of Augusta, GA; Houston, TX, and Baton Rouge, LA. Margaret, a member of Rivergate Garden Club, was an active volunteer with Historic Augusta, and a founding member of Women in Philanthropy of the CSRA.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, are her son Carl Allen Tyson, his wife Rebecca and granddaughter Lucy Camille Tyson; daughter Elizabeth Moran Tyson; sister Leslie Allen Yarborough and her husband Stanley of Hilton Head, SC; brother Carl Morrison Allen III and his wife Barbara of Mount Peasant, SC, and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Beryl Tyson Usry and Ronald P. Usry.
