John was born on May 21st, 1950, in Toronto, Ontario, to Jack and Christabel Lyall, who immigrated to Canada and settled in Toronto following the Second World War. He grew up alongside his younger brother, Richard Lyall, and remained deeply connected to his family throughout his life.
In high school and university, John excelled as a football player in the fullback position. Despite his accomplishments, he was always humble and rarely spoke about them, reflecting the quiet, modest character that defined him.
John shared a beautiful life with his beloved wife, Marina, and they were happily married for 46 years. Together they built a home rooted in love, laughter, and unwavering support.
He was a proud and devoted father to his three sons: John Jr. (Jen), Jeffrey (Jenny), and Matthew (Rebecca). John’s family was his greatest pride, and he was a steady, loving presence in their lives.
To many in the neighbourhood, John was best known for his legendary backyard hockey rink, a place that became a gathering point for kids and families alike. Countless winter days were filled with joy, friendship, and unforgettable memories on that rink—memories that will live on in the hearts of those who played there.
John was also a loving and deeply proud grandfather to his eight treasured grandchildren: Corson, Cecilia, Chloe, Autumn, Victoria, Tyler, Josie and Hannah. One of his greatest joys in life was spending time with his grandchildren, watching them grow, and sharing in their lives.
John was a strong yet gentle man, devoted to his family and grounded in what truly mattered. He cared little for status or material possessions, and even less about what others thought. He lived with humility, kindness, and quiet integrity—values that will continue through the family he built and the lives he touched.
John will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.
