Joyce will be profoundly missed by the many friends and family who had the honour and privilege to know her. Joyce was born in Kingston, Jamaica on July 11, 1929 to the late Ivy (née Hoyse) and Hodge Foreman and was the eldest of five siblings. She was predeceased by infant son Jason, infant grandson Edward and brother Carl. She leaves behind sons Stefan (Sue), Egan (Chantale), Nicholas (Diane), grandchildren Daniel, Émilie (John), Sydney, Sophie, and soon to arrive her first great-grandchild baby-Rayson. Among the many other cherished family members and life long friends who will mourn her passing are sisters Olive (the late Lucien) and Merle (Frederick), “baby” brother George (the late Jean), sister-in-law Georgette (the late Carl), close friends Cecile, Fritz, Horace, Charmaine, Mary, Hilary, Muriel and numerous friends from around the world who consider Joyce as an adopted sister, aunt, mom or grandmother.
Joyce was a petite, beautiful woman who upon first glance could be underestimated. However, she had the spirt, courage, and compassion of a true champion that served and guided her well for 92 years. In her late-20’s, anxious to leave a small island and to see the world, she struck out for adventure and opportunity. Travelling on her own by ship from Jamaica to Canada then again, for reasons only known to Joyce, from New York to Portsmouth, England to seek her fortune. Somewhere during this journey, she got married and in her early 30’s returned to the warmth and sunshine of Jamaica with an infant son and a new husband to start the next chapter of her life. Over the next 10 years her young family grew with the addition of three more sons which by any count would have been a challenge to any young mother. However, true to form as a strong spirited woman, Joyce embraced her role as mother in an all-male household and guided and nurtured her boys with love, respect and the occasional “flying shoe” to the back-side when they and the many neighbourhood kids got into some form of mischief.
In the 1970’s Joyce and family moved permanently to Toronto where she worked hard to provide for her family. In her late 70’s Joyce continued to travel visiting exciting new places and to re-connect with distant relatives and friends. Later in life Joyce moved to Aurora, Ontario to be closer to family where she lived independently for many years until failing health forced her to move to an assisted living facility.
Her family thanks the loving staff at the Renoir Retirement Residence (Newmarket), the compassionate care team members of the Margaret Behan Hospice (Newmarket) and the always caring doctors Kassam, Yeung and Hindocha for their care over the years.
