I taught at Annette Street P.S. from September 1986 until I retired in September of 1995.  Tom was the principal for most of that time. He was certainly energetic and very effective in his role as principal.  He was known as "Tom Terrific".  I don't know how the name came about but it was certainly appropriate.  I was fortunate to be able to spend the final years of my teaching career under the administration of this man.  I remember him well.

With deepest sympathy to Noreen and family at this very sad time.

My sincere condolences to Noreen and her family during this significant loss. We will miss Tom at the Toronto Choristers for his voice in the tenor section and  all his organizational skills around our practises and special concerts.  What will we do without him? He can never be truly replaced. My fondest memory is around Tom adjusting Ralph's microphone during our choir practices. Now that is real attention to detail. We will miss you Tom. Dear Noreen,
Liz and I were greatly shocked and saddened to learn of Tom’s sudden passing. I remember fondly working  with Tom  at Lord Landsdowne. He was such a dynamic leader, filled with passion and energy, and a genuine love for all the students. I learned so much from Tom in our time together and he certainly influenced my future roles in education. I have very happy memories of our time together.

Dear Noreen: It was with great shock and sadness  that I read of Tom's passing. We met, I believe, at Marilyn and John" wedding when you were maid of honour and I was best man. Later we would see one another at principal's meetings where we would exchange news on the Carrs and  reactions to the meeting and life in the 
Board. Tom was discerning and incisive and quickly got to the heart if the matter. Later we met at funerals of colleagues and the Markham theatre occasionally. Tom will be missed but we are the richer for having walked with him on this life's journey.  I pray for peace and comfort to surround you all. Blessings. Bob Wright

I first met Tom in the late 70s at Maurice Cody. As the area math consultant, I was looking for school teams to run Family Math programs. Tom encouraged the staff and parents to participate, and even took part personally in the team training. He was a real hands-on kinda guy.
After I retired from TDSB and joined Psycan, we got to work together again. Tom excelled at organizing the conferences for the consultants. As  plus, I was able to work several conferences alongside Tom, including a lively one in Montreal.
Tom was one-of-a-kind and I have many happy memories of our times together. He was always interested in others, and always had a smile for you.

Marianne  and I were stunned to learn of Tom’s passing.  We have such great memories of our time together with the Queensmen. Everything Tom did was done with passion , care and devotion. He will be greatly missed by all his friends.

Noreen and family,

I'm so sad that Tom is gone. For the short time that I was in the choir at TPC, I really enjoyed sitting in front of him where I could hear him sing the tenor part. When we both moved into the congregation, I was close enough to hear him singing tenor there too. There is going to be a big hole at TPC now and I'm sure there's a much, much larger one in your family.

We were so sad to hear of Tom's passing.  Although we have not seen you for such a long time , we have always looked forward to your Christmas newsletters and catching up on all your family activities and adventures.  We have good memories of working together with you Noreen at Swansea and of knowing Tom as an exceptional principal and educator and friend. You are in our thoughts at this very difficult time.

Tom and I sang the Tenor 1 Part with the Queensmen of Toronto Male Chorus. I was the baby of the choir (now 61) and have enjoyed singing with Tom and the choir. He sang many solos and duets with Ian of our choir at many of our concerts at churches etc. Tom put all he had in making sure that he and others were prepared for our concerts. I remember one of our past Christmas concerts at Martingrove Baptist Church where Tom and I sang so well that evening, we were proud of it. We sang our hearts out. 

Tom, I will miss you, your fellow Queensmen and friend.

He was a great guy, Always strait forword, I enjoyed singing with him in the Queensmen , AMCO exec, and hearing his stories with AMCA , Scholarship program ; How he talked to student's from across Canada and US A on the scholarship benefits. He will be missed. 

My dear Noreen and family, My deepest condolences on the loss of Tom.
My memories go back many years when we worked together to ensure the transition of Grade 8 students from Annette where he was principal to Central Tech. where I was chair of the Transition Committee. We shared a passion to make the move as smooth and comfortable as it could be for the students.
Later, we worked together at Toronto Choristers to set up and organize the Spring Concert at Sir John A Macdonal Secondary School. And of course, shared many cruises with Tom and Noreen over the years.
He was a joy to know and a pleasure to work with. 
A world without Tom is a different world.  He will be missed by many.

He was a wonderful man, very easy to approach and always interesting to talk to.

Dear Noreen & family,

I did not know Tom for very long, just a couple of years at Thornhill Presbyterian Church, but he made an impression on me – a tall, regal, caring, kind & cheerful man; always remembering my name and asking how I was.

The world lost a very smart, gregarious person! I worked with Tom many years ago and he was a super educator! He did indeed know every child’s name! I learned many teaching tricks from him.
The TDSB lost a hero.

I was deeply saddened to hear the news of Tom's passing this past week.  I had the great fortune of working under his leadership at Annette Public School from 1994 to 1998 as a half time music teacher. He was extremely supportive of my work and supportive of the concerts that I co-planned with W. Russ Hall.  He was always available to answer questions and offer helpful suggestions to enhance our music program at Annette. I have the upmost respect for him as a former principal in the TDSB. I extend my sincere and heartfelt condolences to Noreen and his extended family. 

Tom was a wonderful human being.  He loved the children in his care - whether teaching them, principaling (is that a word Tom?) them or supervising them (I have my fondest memories of Tom when he was on the staff of Voices at the Boyne - with Shelagh Cohen or Ann Crysdale-Gourlie at the healm).  Tom was always so up-beat and joyful.  His zest for life was infectious.  He always had a smile on his face and a funny story to relate.  Tom's enthusiasm with and care for the children he was "in charge of" was always inspiring - he truly was an educator who had a "vocation" for the work - it was not his "job" - it was his life.  He will be missed.  My sincere and heartfelt condolences to Noreen and the family.  Know you were married to the best man and had the best Dad I know.  Fondly, Mark

A kinder, gentler man we  will never know.  My connection with Tom was in his retirement years, at our work at Psycan.  What a privilege to work with such a distinguished gentleman.   

It  was with great sadness that we learned of Tom's sudden passing. Tom was our neighbor on Bayswater Ave. for close to 20 years. He always had a kind word for us and asked about our family when passing on his daily walks. His gardens were always immaculate and a pleasure to behold. Without actually planning it we once ended up on the same cruise as Tom and Noreen and enjoyed their company on that trip. With deepest sympathy on your loss in which Barb joins me, Glenn Taylor

I was saddened to read about the passing of your dear husband, father and grandfather.  My heartfelt condolences to all of you.

He was always known to me as Mr. Rayner, since he was my Grade 6 teacher at Pape Ave. Public School. Even though he taught me over 50 years ago, he was one of those rare teachers who made a very positive impact on me as a  student and I always thought very highly and respectfully of him. Besides being very tall (even by a Gr. 6 student’s perspective!), he was a firm but kind teacher who expected the best from his students.  I was very fortunate to have him as my teacher and grateful that he left me with such a wonderful, lifelong memory of my early school years.

May you find comfort in all of the wonderful memories you have of him.

Dear Noreen and Family,

It is with profound sadness that I send to you my sincere condolences on Tom’s passing.
He has rightly been described as a person who has had an impressive effect on everyone with whom he came into contact and will be sorely missed.

I had the privilege of working with him in education in a number of capacities as a teacher and administrator and followed him to Lord Lansdowne where I assumed the role of principal. It was Tom who encouraged me to apply for that role after he had been assigned to Annette. His well-noted attributes of professional knowledge, meticulous organizational skills and warm interpersonal relationships allowed me to inherit a school that was eventually to receive the designation of a world-class school.

After we both retired, I reconnected again with him in a consulting role with the Psycan Corporation where he had been invited to assist in its direction of publishing educational and psychological materials. 

Tom was a whirlwind of energetic action and his dynamic personality drew to him many people  who became motivated as a result. Affectionately known as “Tom Terrific” by his countless friends, his passing will be deeply felt. I am so sorry that he has gone. 

May you and your family be comforted in knowing that there are so many of his friends and associates who are grieving with you.

Dear Noreen,

We will always remember Tom as an energetic and intensely caring  man who always loved the work and singing of the Toronto Choristers. Specifically, as a leading member of the Tenor Section, his voice rang clearly and in perfect pitch. This was very helpful to us since we sat right in front of him and would pick up cues for difficult harmonies from his finely-tuned voice. We will sorely miss him as will the entire choir.

May he rest in eternal peace in a musical heaven.

Oh Noreen,
I am heartbroken to hear of Tom’s sudden passing. You and Tom were the very first people, to whom my Tom introduced me, at tpc. From that moment on, every time we met the two of you were incredibly friendly, helpful and supportive, especially after I had lost my Tom. You always made sure to see that I was okay... to make sure that my family was coping... to share a memory you had of my Tom. You both took me under your wings and I was made to feel welcomed and cared for when I met you each week sitting in the pews ahead of us at church. Being treated  to your choir performances was such a kindness. Sharing Blue Jays stories, family events and travel adventures cemented the feelings of friendship....
Noreen, I am so very sad for your very great loss  of this wonderful man who was your husband and life partner. Please extend my deepest sympathies to your children and grandchildren whom I know will so terribly miss having their Dad and Granddad around, to continue to share in their everyday lives and offer up his advice and wisdom.
You and your entire family are in my thoughts and prayers and I’m sending wishes for strength and understanding as you face the days to come.

MJ has asked me to extend her sincerest condolences to you and your family.  She is so sad and wants you know that her prayers are with you . We spent some time on the phone talking about all the wonderful times we shared with you and Tom and I know she shares in the sentiments I have expressed. 


I'm so sorry. I have many fond memories of Tom and how wonderful he was with all the children and staff at Annette. He really did know every student's name; each fall, when the school would get our package of individual student photographs, Tom would make his own spread sheet for each class;  then he would come to our classrooms and check that he had written the correct name under each picture. I was always impressed at his dedication to connect with the students;  he would get every name correct or only need help with 1 or 2-and it was only October. I was so fortunate to have started my teaching career with Tom; I always felt supported and his door was always opened to "Frick" and "Frack", and the "Queen Bee"-the nicknames he had for  myself, Alice and Ev. Tom would listen and truly cared, always finding a way to help us find a solution or funds for whatever request we brought to him. 
Each time I saw Tom outside of school, Noreen you were always by his side; you could see how strong a bond you both had, how much you cared for each other. My thoughts are with you Noreen and your family; I am so sorry. He was a wonderful person and will be missed. Take care.

As Tony and Kristin’s next door neighbours, we got to know Tom from his many visits to their home. Tom always had a pleasant “hello” and would take a few minutes to chat.
There were many times we saw Tom as he was doing some gardening work at Tony & Kristin’s house. We would asked him if he would come over to our house and do some work for us as well. He would laugh and reply; “I’ll be right over”. Tom was just that type of guy.
Quite often Audrena and I would see Tom strolling about in the neighbourhood something he clearly loved to do....or at the lottery store purchasing his tickets.
 
We will remember Tom for his very warm and caring personality...the world has truly lost a wonderful man. We will miss Tom but our memories of him will live on.
