Lorne Edwin Smith

July 23, 1926 – August 2, 2017

Lorne Smith passed away peacefully on August 2, 2017 in his 92nd year. He was the devoted husband to Jean (Watson) for 64 years. He was also the loving father to Laurie (Jerome) and Clark (Wendy) and the proud grandfather to Paige (Dan), Tyler, Madison and Carter.

Lorne was born in Toronto in 1926 to Mabel and Charles Smith. He grew up in Leaside and attended North Toronto Collegiate Institute.

He was a talented artist and musician and would have liked to pursue a career in architecture but his father passed away when Lorne was a young boy so instead he accepted an opportunity with an accounting firm and studied to become a Chartered Accountant. He enjoyed a successful career in finance culminating in his final role as Vice President of The Becker Milk Company.

He met his wife, Jean, through a mutual friend in 1950 and they were married in 1953.

One of Lorne’s favourite things was to spend time at the family cottage on Loon Lake in Muskoka. The property was purchased in 1967 and it was a true labour of love for Lorne and his family as they transitioned from camping to building a cottage and eventually expanding the cottage as the family grew to include grandchildren.

Lorne was an active member of Aurora United Church and he enjoyed singing in the choir for many years. Reverend Andy has been a great support to Lorne and Jean over the years, particularly in the past few months.

A celebration of Lorne’s life will be held on Thursday, August 10th at Trinity Anglican Church, 79 Victoria Street in Aurora, Ontario. There will be an opportunity to visit with the family at 1 pm followed by a service at 2 pm and reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Aurora United Church Future Fund to support the construction of a new church after the historical original church burned to the ground in 2014.
