Born in the Netherlands, Simon left his homeland at the age of 19, immigrating to Canada in 1949 , sailing to Halifax, Nova Scotia, and making his way to Ontario to build a new life. Not long after, he met his beloved wife, Linda Tjoelker, at the Springdale Christian Reformed Church, where they were later married. Together they raised three sons: Clarence (Gonda), George (Darlene), and Ron (Trish).
Simon and Linda were blessed with five grandchildren — Cheryl (Paul), Jeff (Alison), Laura, Jason, and Stacy (Jake) and five great-grandchildren: Juliana, Ava, Asher, Jacob, and Adelaide.
Simon was a devoted family man who loved nothing more than spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He always took a genuine interest in their lives, cheering them on in their adventures and accomplishments.
A faithful churchgoer throughout his life, Simon preferred to worship quietly, choosing to lead by example through kindness and humility.
He had a keen mind for numbers and finances, but technology often got the better of him — a fact that provided the family with endless laughter and affectionate teasing. He was known for his fondness for the TV show Hee Haw and for telling the world’s worst dad jokes, which somehow always brought a smile to those around him. Simon retired from CN Rail after a long career.
Simon was predeceased by his beloved wife Linda, his brothers George and Elwood, and his sisters Durkje and Merkje. He is survived by his sister Shirley Pyl of Seattle, Washington, as well as his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who will carry his memory forward with love and gratitude.
A private family burial will be held on Tuesday, June 24,2025 followed by a public Memorial Service at 11 am to be held at Thompson Funeral Home, 530 Industrial Parkway S. Aurora. A reception will follow the service, and all who knew Simon are welcome to join the family in remembering and celebrating his life.
Don't weep for me when I am gone,
I've left this world of sin;
My soul to Heaven has flown above,
Where life and joy begin.
I'm resting in my Savior's arms,
My faith has found its goal;
The trials of this earthly life Can't touch my peaceful soul.
The Lord I served with quiet love
Now walks with me each day,
No pain, no sorrow, tears or loss Can steal my joy away.
So think of me with smiles, not tears,
And know I'm safe above;
Until we meet at Jesus' feet,
Surrounded by His love
