A wonderful life ended on Saturday, June 6th, 2015 when Sue Burns died at home surrounded by her family, flowers from her garden and her dogs, Bess and Pickles. Sue was born in Toronto on September 29th, 1938, the daughter of the late Tiny and Kaye Cathers, sister to John Cathers, Elizabeth Pickford, and the late David Cathers (Connie). Sue was the lucky wife and best friend to Michael Burns.
Sue’s love of children was shared with Kate Bahen, Tracey McCowen, Charles Burns, Shelly Burns (Norman Kirton), Catherine Day-Phillips (Todd), and Richard Day (Susie Smith). But that wasn’t enough… Sue was the Mother-spirit to so, so many more.
Nothing gave Sue more joy than being Granny to Jack, Susie and Mikey Bahen; Trevor and Lauren Kirton; Blake and Colten Day-Phillips; and Dinny Day all of whom she showered with love and extravagance.
Sue was a stewardess with Pan Am in the glamour days of jet travel. She lived 17 years in London, England, where Kate and Tracey were born. In 1976, at the Montreal Olympics in a chance encounter, she re-met a teenage beau. Frequent travel across the Atlantic ensued. In 1978, her family joined Michael’s at Kingfield Farms not 10 miles from her childhood home of Windy Fields in Newmarket.
Sue’s love of life was shared in abundance with her friends in Canada, England, The St. Andrew’s Club in Delray, Florida and around the world.
Sue passionately supported many causes. If you would like to make donation in Sue’s name may we suggest The Toronto Botanical Gardens, Equine Research, The Sunnybrook Hospital Foundation, The Country Day School, and Charity Intelligence Canada.
Sue was truly grateful for the care she received at Sunnybrook Hospital. The family is deeply appreciative of the caring medical team at Bayshore Home Health for fulfilling Sue’s wish to be at home, and the family would like to acknowledge the tireless loyalty of Liezl and Lidia.
To celebrate Sue Burns’ wonderful life, all are welcome at All Saint’s Anglican Church, 12935 Keele Street in King City on Tuesday, June 16th at 2pm. A country reception will follow at the farm. A private service and cremation have been held.
In lieu of flowers, please send flowers to someone you love.
