Alberta Stevens Vaughn was born in the area known as Nymph, near Evergreen, Conecuh County, Alabama on February 27, 1934 to the union of Herbert Stevens and Mary Johnson Stevens. Alberta’s mother passed away when Alberta was a mere toddler but she did not lack for a mother’s love as she was raised in the loving arms of her extended family.
Sister Alberta Vaughn was a member of David Chapel Missionary Baptist Church and especially enjoyed Bible Study classes. The visits from the Church Missions helped to sustain her spiritually as her Parkinson’s disease illness progressed.
Alberta was employed at Bergstrom Air Force Base for many years until its closure. She and her husband, Troy were owners of Quartermaster Services, a small business. Alberta enjoyed family gatherings and entertaining family and friends at her home in Buda, Texas. She enjoyed listening to music and dancing. When the care staff turned on catchy music, they knew they could count on Mom to “cut the rug” with them and bring a little excitement into the eyes of the other residents.
On Friday, July 1, 2011, Alberta Vaughn was wrapped into the arms of our Lord and guided to Heaven. In the nights prior to her passing, Alberta had called out “Mary” in her sleep so Alberta knew that her best friend, Mary Rawlins, was waiting in anticipation of Alberta’s arrival. Alberta was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert Stevens and Mary Johnson Stevens; her husband, Troy Vaughn; brother, Nathaniel Stevens; sisters, Henrietta Stevens and Shirley Stevens.
She is survived by her children, Leala (Tom) Mann, Barbara (Larry) Kimbrough, Joyce Earvin, George Salter, Jr., and Jeffery Salter; and sisters, Ruby Carnell, Frances White, Earnestine Dees, Alfreda Hodoh, and Marie Stevens; and by brothers, Herbert Stevens, Jr., John E. Stevens, Robert L. Stevens, Alphonso Stevens, and George Stevens. She is also survived by grandchildren, great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made in honor of Alberta to Capital Area Parkinson’s Society at www.capitalareaparkinsons.org.
