
Deacon Alfred J. Kelly, MD, of Steubenville, Ohio died at his home on Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at the age of 98. He was born on March 27, 1908 in Waco, Texas, to the late Cyril and Adelphine Herbelin Kelly. He is preceded in death by his wife, Jane Liebert Kelly; and three sons, Paul Henry, Michael Christopher, and Mark Stephen Kelly. Dr. Kelly is survived by his three sons, John Alfred Kelly of San Antonio, TX, Robert Joseph Kelly of Jerome, MI; and Bernard Clement Kelly of Baton Rouge, LA; four daughters, Mary Kelly-Dillon of Kyle, TX, Sister Grace of the Cross, of the Sisters of Reparation to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Steubenville, Ohio; Mary Catherine Kelly of Pearsall, TX; and Mary Theresa Kelly of Jefferson, GA; and nineteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Upon graduating from high school, Dr. Kelly entered the cotton business in Galveston for four years, then spent one year in chiropractic school prior to enrolling in the University of Texas, where he obtained both electrical and chemical engineering degrees with honors. He later obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree, and during his career he specialized in surgery, anesthesiology, OB-GYN and family medicine. Dr. Kelly served his country as a medical officer in the 101st Airborne Division during World War II, in Italy and Northern Europe. He was at Anzio and the Battle of the Bulge. Dr. Kelly spent two years as a Trappist monk in Gethsemane, KY. He was a Permanent Deacon of the Catholic Church, a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, former president of the Right to Life and the Sierra Club in San Antonio, TX. Mass of the Christian Burial will follow a Rosary at 1:45 PM on Wednesday, May 24 at Santa Cruz Catholic Church in Buda, TX with Msgr. Joseph Deane officiating.
