Alice Vacek Freytag died peacefully on July 29, 2017 in Austin, Texas. Alice was born June 6, 1921 to Emilie and Joseph Vacek in the Czech farming community of Kovar, Texas. She married Anton (Tony) Freytag in 1942. Until Tony’s sudden death in 1966, she was a homemaker, raising five children. She then went to work as Cafeteria Manager at Sacred Heart School. She retired from the school at age 65 and worked at her son, Ken’s, business, Freytag’s
Florist, until 2014.
Alice’s Catholic faith provided a solid foundation for her life from a young age. Among early memories, she recalled her father helping with the construction of the church in Kovar. In Austin, she and Tony were strong supporters of St. Mary’s Cathedral and helped establish Sacred Heart Church. Most recently, she was a member of St. Louis King of France Catholic Church. She participated in many Catholic Women’s groups and bible studies, and was a member of KJT, the Catholic Union of Texas founded by Czech immigrants.
Family and friends will remember Alice as a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, warm hostess, and excellent cook. She welcomed friends, neighbors, and several generations of family into her home any time, and especially for festive holiday celebrations. Alice enjoyed games of dominoes and spending time outdoors, whether fishing while on vacation or tending to her flower beds at home. She became an international traveler in her retirement and, in recent years, an enthusiastic supporter of her great-grandchildren’s many activities and the San Antonio Spurs.
Alice is survived by her children Diane Lung (Joe), Bob, Tony (Leslie), Ken (Terri), and Lisa Grigar; grandchildren Michael Lung (Joanna Cook), Gretchen Patterson (Jerome), Jenifer Young, (Shane), Mark Lung, Mark Freytag, Chad Freytag (Jordan), Casey Freytag, Ian Grigar (Jill), and Caroline Bratcher (Nick); great-grandchildren Ford and Wyatt Young, Gracie, Emme, and Whit Patterson, Opal and Charles Lung, Evan and Tate Lung, Reed and Case Freytag, Cooper and Avery Chitsey, and Braden and Madelyn Grigar.
She was predeceased by her daughter Betty Jane, husband Tony, parents Emilie and Joseph, siblings George, Adolph, Alois, Willie, Martha, Lillie, Annie, and Mary, and daughters-in-law Virginia Freytag and Cindy Freytag.
The family wishes to thank Rick Henderson, close neighbors, Parsons House, and Hospice for their loving support.
Rosary will recite at 6:30pm with the visitation starting at 7:00pm on Wednesday, 2nd of August 2017 at Cook Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Blvd, Austin, Texas 78752.
The Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, 3rd of August at 10:30am at St. Louis King of France Catholic Church with Monsignor Elmer Holtman officiating, grandsons and great-grandsons serving as pallbearers, and granddaughters and great-granddaughters serving as readers. Burial will follow at Assumption Cemetery.
