Our beloved Alla Ray Goodwin passed away peacefully on December 25, 2024, in Austin, Texas. She was 92 years old and lived a good life. She was an adored wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother to 21 and a dear friend to many.
Alla was born in Dublin, Texas on March 20, 1932 to Elda & Inez Goodson. The family moved to Freer, Texas during the “oil boom”. Growing up in Freer, she made lifelong friends. Upon graduation she moved to San Antonio to attend business school where she met and fell in love with her husband of 23 years, David Long. Here they started a loving family and later moved to Austin. After David’s passing, Alla found love again with NM Goodwin in 1980, with whom she shared joyous travels and cherished moments with her grandchildren.
Alla led a remarkable life filled with dedication to her family and career. Professionally, Alla served as an assistant to the Dean at the University of Texas Law School. Her exceptional contributions were honored with a conference room named after her—a testament to her lasting impact on the institution.
Alla is lovingly remembered by her children: Thomas Long (Janice), Penny Whited (Charles), and Martha Chapman (Kyle). She was also a proud grandmother to David Long (Marcy), Allison Gifford (Robert), Laura Long, Chad Whited (Amy), Amanda Tillman (Scott), Brett Chapman (Jordan), Bradley Chapman (Jeana), and Brian Chapman (Stephanie).
Alla was truly a very special person. She loved her grandkids and spending time with them. The kids always looked forward to her delicious breakfasts and it was not uncommon for them to invite a friend to join them. Alla lived by John 13:34-35 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
In addition to her husbands and parents, Alla was preceded in death by her brother Tommy G. Goodson and sisters Jo Hutcherson and Patsy Burdine.
A visitation will be held at noon on January 5, 2025, with a service at 1 PM at Weed Corley Fish Funeral Home, located at 5416 Parkcrest Drive, Austin, TX 78731. Burial will follow at Austin Memorial Park, and then a reception will be held.
Alla’s legacy is one of love, dedication, and service. She was a blessing to many and her memory will be cherished. May her memory bring comfort to those she leaves behind.
