

Alta Rae Brooks Alta Rae Brooks passed away on Monday, March 15, 2004 after a long illness. Alta was born on August 1, 1935 in Kansas City, Missouri. She was the only child of Mattie and Roy Fann. She attended Paseo High School where she gave the graduation speech. She received her bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Kansas and was a speech correctionist with the Overland Park, Kansas public school system for three years. She married Robert D. Brooks on June 16, 1961. Alta and Robert attended the University of Wisconsin where they both received their Ph.D. degrees in 1968. Alta, then joined the faculty of Southwest Texas State University where she was an Associate Professor and Program Director of the Division of Speech Pathology. Alta was especially interested in the language of children and is the author of a book outlining a therapy procedure for children with speech problems. The procedure is still used in many speech correction programs around the country. She is a noted published researcher and is listed in the Worlds Whos Who of Women. Alta is dearly missed by her husband, Robert; daughter and Son-in-law, Allyson and Mike Fertig; and grand daughter, Brooke, who live in Austin, as well as her many friends. The family wishes to thank her doctors, the staff of Stonebridge Health Center and to Odessey Hospice for her care, especially during her final days. A memorial service for Alta will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 20th at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Chapel, 3125 N.
