Amy Cherrie Hunter Dorman August 22, 1938 ~ July 14, 2009 Cherrie was born in Mulberry, Arkansas, later moving with her parents to Orange, Texas where she graduated from Lutcher Stark High School. She arrived in Austin in 1958 and earned her Bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Her professional life began at the Cerebral Palsy Center, and continued at the Texas Workforce Commission, where she served for over 30 years. Cherrie's career was rewarding in and of itself, but it was ultimately the people with whom she worked….their work, their families, their goals, their life struggles, that made her career important to her. Cherrie loved Austin. She was one of those who had the good sense never to leave. She loved the Texas Hill Country, St. Francis Anglican Church, Green Pastures….her list was long. Cherrie blossomed in her retirement. She had found her place of comfort, of resolve, of building the life she required. She sought - and achieved - grace and dignity, and was interested in all areas of beauty. She became a Master Gardner, attended plays, art galleries, museums, and enjoyed musical theatre. She stretched to see the world at its best, and traveled in her retirement to make up for what she missed while a working single parent. Cherrie's life was favored by a long list of people she loved and who loved her. Her family - her son, Chris, daughter Rachael Urban and her husband Lance, her grandchildren, Merrie Paige, Anna, and Heath, her cousin Bob Shambarger and Bob's wife Johnny Faye - are joined in celebration of her life by the sisters of her heart - Charlotte Matthews, Nancy Osgood, and Rebecca Strickland Tudor, and many other treasured friends who became her family. A Memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel, 3125 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin.
