Growing up, there was 2 songs that always put me in the mind of my Big Brother, Arthur, AKA, Sonny. Neither of the songs depicted our lives, but some of the words depicted his steadfastness and commitment to the family, especially the girls.  One song “Patches” talked about his daddy and other people depending on him because he was the oldest”. The other song “Lean On Me”, talked about him being there for his friends, and in our case, for his sisters. These songs always touched my heart and gave me warm thoughts of my Big Brother. I always felt like he was saying these words to us, living these words for us, his sisters.

My Big Brother was the fixit man, the moving man, the mechanic, the plumber, Santa and much more. He always showed up, with a smile. He moved my daughters to and from college. He moved his sisters across town, across Texas.  He moved big box TVs up flights of apartment stairs, and even considered trying to get king-size mattress through 2 story windows.
Yes, he was “THE MAN”, we could and did LEAN and DEPEND on.

Arthur Lee Wilson, my oldest brother.  My BIG brother. My mother’s 12-pound baby.
The ladies at the VA facility said they announced him when he came into a room. They said “Hercules” is coming. Make way, Hercules is coming.  In his younger days he probably did have the physique of Hercules, but I knew him as a “Gentle Giant”.  A Gentle Giant who I thought was the strongest man in the world.  I always wondered when I was younger whether he would burst out of his clothes like the “Hulk” if he ever got angry. But the reality, is, in all my years, I only saw him get angry once. That was within the last 10 years, during his illness. And even then, it wasn’t as much anger, as it was agitation.
My Big brother and I shared a special bond. With him being the Oldest Boy and me being the youngest, we shared birthdays. His on October 12 and mines on October 13. My most memorable birthday celebration was when HE turned 18.  I just knew an 18-year-old MAN was not going to celebrate his Rite of Passage with a 7-year-old child.  But much to my surprise, he showed up, with a miniature porcelain Tea Set and we sat together, sipping milk and cookies. I felt like royalty. We celebrated every birthday together, except probably when he was in Viet Nam. When he became ill, we still celebrated  them in-person or by phone.

My Daddy,
I only know you as "my daddy". I will miss you lots. We have been through much together. You have fought a good fight. Your not in any pain anymore. Your at peace, and with mom. I miss you both very much. I have my photos, and memories. Of our times we spend  together. Even if we were playing Gin,  or just sitting talking, or watching tv, or riding around visiting folk, going fishing, or going to Billy's bbq. I still enjoyed it very much. I will miss those times, and more. Most of all I will miss you. My daddy...

I am reminded of so many memories of my Uncle but in this holiday season what sticks out most are the Christmases when he would come to house dressed as Santa.

And this huge gentle giant of a man was the best at it for all the kids. As a kid I had never seen a man so giant- like a figure in a storybook and that made him heroic in my eyes. 

I recall holiday dinners with he and Aunt Louise at their house, his long lasting love for Golden Corral and if there was any happenings in the lives of my Mom, sisters and I and he could physically be there, from weddings to birthday dinners to graduations, he was there. 

More recently I remember his time spent playing dominoes with Daddy and Uncle Ricky where I learned his love for ice cream. Something they all looked forward to this time of year. 

Sending loads of love to his children and light to my family from abroad. 

Missing you all dearly and remember "to be absent from the body, is to be present with the Lord".

I have a lot of memories from down through the years.  One memory that really comes to mind is the Egg Nog Recipe that was on the fridge & you made it one Christmas.  You made sure that the egg was stirred up really good (our request especially Mom's!) because we didn't want to taste the egg by itself.  The only thing was it wasn't as thick as regular Egg Nog.  But, it was good.  You made it a couple more times on Christmas.  I will never forget you & I thank you for your service to our Country.  

Uncle sonny I will always remember your big smile and lovely heart and being a wonderful uncle.  Me and my kids will always miss you . Love Robert Sean Chelsea and Rodney
