

Barbara Routh Barbara Bettelheim Routh of Bronxville, New York and Vero Beach, Florida died on April 23rd, in Austin, Texas. She was 79 years old. She was born on January 6, 1927 in New York City, the daughter of Alfred James Bettelheim and Bernardine V.B. Bettelheim. She moved with her family to Bronxville from Pennsylvania in 1945. She married John Webb Routh on May 31, 1952 and resided in Bronxville for some 40 years before moving to Vero Beach in 1991. Barbara graduated from Skidmore College in 1948 with a B.S. degree in Nursing and entered upon a nursing career that was interrupted in order to raise a family. Subsequently she received an M.A. degree in nursing education from New York University in 1978 and was elected to Sigma Theta Tau national honorary society. She resumed her career and joined the faculty on the Mount Vernon Hospital School of Nursing, serving as an instructor and on its Advisory Committee. She was instrumental in arranging an affiliation of the School of Nursing with Concordia College in Bronxville. Barbara was a member of the Bronxville League for Service and served as its president and as a member of its Board of Governors. She was also very active in the Reformed Church of Bronxville serving as treasurer of the Womens Society and Editor of its cookbook fundraiser, Gracious Offerings. Mrs. Routh was a member of the Board of Directors, Public Health Nursing Organization of Eastchester, was a member of the Professional Advisory Committee, of the Department of Health of Westchester County, and a member of the American Nurses Association. She was an associate member of the Community Church of Vero Beach and participated in many of its programs. She was a member of the Daughters of The American Revolution serving as treasurer and corresponding secretary of her local chapter. Barbara loved to travel and she and John had the opportunity to take trips all over the world, but her favorite place was Long Beach Island, at the Jersey Shore where she visited for over sixty years. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and very recently by beloved husband John Webb Routh. She is survived by daughters Susan Routh of Dallas, TX, Nancy Routh of Boston, MA, Joan Routh Aydam and son-in-law Bill Aydam of Austin, TX and three wonderful grandchildren Wm. Hogan Aydam III, Ellen Bracey Aydam and Christopher John Aydam, as well as many other relatives and friends around the country. A memorial service will be held Friday April 28th, 2006 at the Summit at Lakeway, 1915 Lohmans Crossing Road, Lakeway, Texas 78734 at 3:00.
