Bud attended Beaumont Public Schools and after graduating from Beaumont High School, he joined the United States Marines in 1942 where he completed over 25 combat missions in an SB2C Dauntless Dive Bomber. After the war, he attended Lamar University and graduated from the Ohio College of Podiatry. He married Margaret Shovary in 1949 and they were married 71 years. They raised their four children in Austin where he opened podiatry practice in 1950. He retired in 2000.
Bud’s military service provided him with a lifelong love of aviation. He also enjoyed spending time with friends and family at the Port Aransas condo and the ranch in Bertram. He was an active member St. Matthews Church, and particularly loved participating in the Men’s Group. Over the years, Bud and Margaret cherished spending time together—square dancing with friends, cheering on their children and grandchildren at countless sporting events, and encouraging them in their careers. Bud was the ultimate do-it-yourselfer, always ready to build, repair, or create on a budget. His projects were as ambitious as they were numerous, ranging from a boat and an airplane to a family condo.
Bud was preceded in passing by his wife Margaret and brother Beverly.
He is survived by his daughter Ann Poehl and her husband Larry of College Station, sons John Payne, Thomas Payne and his wife Pat, both of Austin, and daughter Liz Robinson and her husband Tom of Austin. They were beloved by their grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The family is indebted to Jo Hoffs for her love, support, and companionship to Bud these last years. They are also deeply grateful for the staff at Halcyon and the Triangle for their faithful and excellent service in many capacities while he was a resident, especially in his final days.
Margaret R. Payne passed away July 31, 2020. She was born on April 19, 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio to John and Ann Shovary. She graduated from Shaker Heights High School and began her career at Higbee’s Department Store, where she worked as a buyer in the Sportswear Department. It was there that she met a young shoe salesman with dreams of becoming a podiatrist, and the two soon fell in love and married. She had a natural eye for fashion and beauty, and her creativity touched everything she did. Most of all, she was a devoted and selfless grandmother and mother—always her children’s greatest advocate, supporting them in every way. Whether serving as a PTA member, room mother, or Brownie leader, she was deeply invested and involved in their lives. She had a beautiful and generous smile, making people feel instantly at ease.
