Benny passed away October 7, 2006 after a short illness at the age of 77. Benny was born April 4th 1929 in Lee County Texas to Dee Roy McDavid and Eula Belle Parker McDavid who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elsie Turner McDavid, 5 children (Charles, Patrick his wife Cheryl, Ronald his wife Barbara, Randall, Rebecca and her husband Mike), 13 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, and his sister, Ophelia McDavid Wagner. Benny grew up in the Knobbs area of Lee County. He helped his father raise hogs and cotton. His favorite pastimes as a young man were roping and hunting. He loved a good horse and a good dog. Upon graduation from Lexington High School he married Elsie and moved to Austin where he worked at the State hospital and joined the Texas Army National Guard. He applied and was accepted into the Austin Police Department. He served the APD and City of Austin with pride and honor for 19 years and achieved the rank of Major. Benny was medically retired from APD after having been injured in the line of duty in 1972, soon after he also retired from the National Guard with the rank of Lt. Colonel. During his professional career he served as a Deacon at Crestview Baptist Church and in many other volunteer capacities for his community. His retirement years were filled with small engine repair and making furniture for his children and many grandchildren. Benny had a smile that would light up a room and leave a lasting impression on those he shared it with. The family would like to thank everyone who helped Benny and his loved ones through the past several months. Special thanks are given to Hospice Austin and the APD Chaplins Corp. Visitation and viewing will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 10, 2006 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 at the funeral home. Interment and a brief service will follow at the Knobbs Springs Cemetery, Lexington, Texas.
